For the third Winter Olympics in a row, U.S. women won more gold medals and more medals overall than U.S. men. In the Summer Olympics, it’s four in a row for U.S. women. Why? Title IX of course. My ⁦@usatodaysports⁩ column: usatoday.com/story/sports/c…

@andyserling Ah, thanks for the reminder; I remember that night so well. I was driving home across the GWB, loving seeing the endless expanse of Manhattan's lights below me, when the news came on the radio.

Just coming home, and the cab passed the Dakota, which is near where I live, and I realized it is not just the anniversary, but also about the same time, that John Lennon was killed. 45 years ago.

Eric Ravilious was killed #OTD in 1942 when the aircraft he was in during a search & rescue mission off Iceland failed to return. From the countryside to war, his depiction of Britain in the 30s & early years of #WW2 remain an incredible legacy, decades after his death.

@HorseyGort Yeah...right up there with being p.o.'d that my college graduation was the same day as Secretariat's Preakness. I finally managed to watch it live on a bar tv in the restaurant where I went with my parents. A win-win Day!

Ron Turcotte died today. I'll never forget the night these two men rolled toward me on the red carpet: Secretariat's exercise rider, the late Charlie Davis & his jockey, Ron Turcotte. These two men had ridden Greatness. It was at the premiere of "Secretariat" in 2010. #memories

We are incredibly disappointed that the President’s 2026 budget request strips protective measures for wild horses. These national icons deserve better than being sold to an ultimate fate of destruction and we will be fighting back. Join us in urging Congress to maintain existing measures in the upcoming FY 2026 Interior appropriations bill that protect wild horses from being killed and keep them out of the slaughter pipeline. 2025 Kentucky Derby Trail Saturday's Rebel Stakes Grade 2, $1.25 million My Derby pick, Sandman, makes his return after his courageous second-place finish last time out, despite stumbling out of the starting gates and spotting the field numerous lengths 🙌 Who do you like? 🧐 Speed King, Sandman and Tiztastic, who formed the trifecta last month in the Southwest (G3), return to the same 1 1/16 miles of Oaklawn dirt Saturday when they face a full field of rivals in the Grade 2, $1.25 million Rebel Stakes. For the top five finishers among the 14 3-year-olds, the race is worth 50-25-15-10-5 qualifying points for Kentucky Derby 2025. That makes the Rebel a virtual win-and-you’re-in for the May 3 classic. Owned by Ted Bowman’s Triton Thoroughbreds and trained by Ron Moquett, Speed King led at every call Jan. 25 en route to his 14-1 upset in the Southwest. The colt by Volatile began his career with a sprint win Nov. 1 at Churchill Downs before coming in second in the Remington Springboard Mile on Dec. 13. Sandman closed from last place in the Southwest and lost by just one length. The Tapit colt owned by D. J. Stables and their partners was an allowance winner going a mile at Oaklawn in December for trainer Mark Casse. Tiztastic, who is owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Coolmore, won twice on the Kentucky Downs turf last summer. Then trainer Steve Asmussen switched him to dirt at Churchill Downs, where the Tiz the Law colt wound up second in the Street Sense and third in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) to finish his 2-year-old campaign. Coal Battle looks for his fourth consecutive victory, all in stakes. After taking the Jean Lafitte in the mud at Delta Downs, the Springboard Mile at Remington Park and last month’s Smarty Jones at Oaklawn, this will be his first time in graded company. Madaket Road will race for eight-time Rebel-winning trainer Bob Baffert. He comes back from a weakening third Feb. 1 in the one-mile Robert B. Lewis (G3). He broke his maiden on second asking Dec. 26 at Santa Anita. Bullard goes two turns for the first time after finishing third last month in the seven-furlong San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita. He was 2-for-2 as a 2-year-old, winning his debut and the Bob Hope (G3) at Del Mar. Dreaminblue broke his maiden on fourth asking with a six-furlong triumph Jan. 25 at Oaklawn, earning a 92 Beyer Speed Figure according to Daily Racing Form. About to make his ninth start, Innovator brings the most experience to the Rebel. He followed his maiden victory Dec. 29 with a third-place finish in the sloppy running of last month’s Lecomte (G3) at Fair Grounds. The Rebel will be the 11th of 12 races on Saturday’s Oaklawn card. It is scheduled for 6:23 p.m. EST with the first post at 1 p.m. horseracingnation.com/news/Kentucky_…

🗣️ "We're one of the few who do it now. We just think it's good for them and it shows." In preparation for the breeding season, @WinStarFarm uses the time-honored tradition of riding their stallions under saddle during the off-months to help them maintain their fitness. Among those who are ridden at the farm are one of the sport's top sires, Constitution, as well as four-time Grade I winner Life Is Good and new-for-2025 Heartland, all 'TDN Rising Stars' during their racing careers. In this feature, @JillWilliamsTDN chats with WinStar's stallion manager, Larry McGinnis, along with the man in the saddle, Alvaro Quinteros: thoroughbreddailynews.com/healthy-stride…

I guess it's not just me. Maybe we can socialize while waiting to pick up our takeout orders? Even the stats in this article will make you feel a little lonely.
Ken Burns@KenBurns

Don't know about you but I feel pretty badly about this stat: "The share of U.S. adults having dinner or drinks with friends on any given night has declined by more than 30 percent in the past 20 years."
