Japan’s PM said the conversation over dispatching naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz was of “sensitive nature” and that “there are certain actions she can and cannot take within the scope of Japanese law.”
We still don’t have a direct answer on if she is helping or not. But sounds like the latter.

Per the foreign pool on how the conversation between Japan’s PM and Trump went today on the Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Takaichi left the White House after bilateral meetings concluded and debriefed the Japanese traveling press on the talks. She will return to the White House for the planned dinner. Q. How did the discussion regarding the dispatch of naval vessels go? Takaichi: While the conversation was of a sensitive nature, the consensus was that ensuring the safety of the Strait of Hormuz is of the utmost importance. However, there are certain actions we can and cannot take within the scope of Japanese law, so I provided a detailed and thorough explanation of this matter.

People were fine with the arrangement until the accident and its subsequent management. Now they're hesitant to trust something so potentially lethal to a private shareholder model.

Not that I want to keep this fight going but the six nations who are a party to the statement have merely "express[ed] ... readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait." This a rhetorical deescelation at most I would say.

Thailand has been stuck in the middle-income trap for a very long time. Malaysia is too, even if it's less pronounced than Thailand's case. In 10 to 15 years,Vietnam will be the next country to approach the truth zone and pass the middle-income trap test. Vietnam checks many of the boxes that few emerging countries had when they faced the middle-income trap test,this is quite rare. Vietnam has a real chance of escaping the middle-income trap,I would estimate the odds at roughly 60/40 in favor of success.

@atlanticesque Maybe I’m too nihilistic, but if I had to choose between rotting in solitary till the end of days and suffering a few minutes (at most), I’d definitely pick the former.
There are valid concerns with the death penalty but IMO cruelty is not a valid one.

A recurring issue with industrial policy is that corporate management in some countires just isn't as competent or energetic as others.

God forbid you want to find an older article, their news sorting stops at 1 year+. Cool I wanted to find something from ~2018 but it was a hot topic in 2023 so that’s all you’ll get and there’s no way to filter it out.

A useful defence of the war strategy here, but this is the line I take issue with:
"This is not aimless bombing. It is a methodical campaign to ensure that what has been destroyed cannot be rebuilt."
It's a big and IMO incorrect judgment that this can't be rebuilt.
