@JesslovesMJK @mattwridley For DNA engineering, one would presumably use codon optimization so as not to introduce GC rich region(s). Here's the furin RNA sequence in question: "CCTCGGCGGGCA" If you were engineering the amino acid sequence, you would not use those codons.

@mattwridley Well actually, to be perfectly accurate, other viruses do have furin cleavage sites but NONE with the PRRAR specific site. That's because it was made in a lab using recombination techniques.

I have been told someone found my lecture persuasive until they spoke to a virologist who said: "lots of viruses have furin cleavage sites". Repeat after me, slowly: SARS-COV-2 IS THE ONLY SARBECOVIRUS EVER FOUND WITH A FURIN CLEAVAGE SITE. OUT OF SEVERAL HUNDRED STRAINS.

In my lecture at @NIH, at the invitation of @NIHDirector_Jay, I explained why I changed my mind from thinking the lab leak theory of covid origins was unlikely to thinking it was almost certainly true. Please watch and assess the evidence yourself. videocast.nih.gov/watch/244438a5…

SARS-CoV-2 is the only sarbecovirus ever found with an FCS. The idea to insert an FCS into sarbecoviruses in 2018 was inspired by the natural occurrence of FCS in more distant viruses. The dangerous bias of many virologists is no longer surprising. I'm unsure if any scientific field has been as thoroughly disgraced as modern virology, which is deeply tragic given the critical importance of the field to the health of our species. It will take decades to repair and rebuild trust with the public.

Timothy Weah was essentially told to “shut up and dribble” by his #USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino after he spoke out against outrageous World Cup ticket prices. Here he is at Zohran Mamdani’s affordable tickets press conference.

The origin of covid is a nonpartisan issue. It has become obvious to those without a conflict of interest that the predominance of circumstantial evidence strongly points toward a lab incident, again this is nonpartisan. I understand some disagree, but there should be no disagreement that the US must now lead with diplomacy to establish enforceable international biosafety and biosecurity standards and regulations/safeguards - especially for dangerous dual use dGOF research.
Senator Ashley Moody@SenAshleyMoody

Jarring to witness not a single Democrat participate in today’s hearing. Clearly, they do not care about what happened under their leadership during COVID.

@dilanesper The process that led us to the current iteration of the Supreme Court is inferior and less democratic than any other system ever conceived. The notion that the court is an “independent judiciary” is incredibly naive. See Alito on any topic.

This is obviously demagoguery, but to be clear, packing the Court to 13 Justices would destroy the independent judiciary and make the courts the political tool of whoever won the last electoral trifecta, while sending the rest of US law into chaos.
Rep. Ro Khanna@RepRoKhanna

The Supreme Court has engaged in an ugly recidivism that has marked the fastest rollback of Black political rights since Reconstruction. 18 year terms limits on Justices now. Expand the court from 9 to 13 Justices now.

@JonahDispatch Goldberg demands deep skepticism of any state that claims to use absolute power for a righteous cause. Yet, when analyzing Israel, he defends their official narratives at face value, and dismisses all whistleblowers as bad actors—the exact playbook he warns against in his book.

@SouthernKeeks I think most people find this maudlin performance hypocritical. As a lawmaker Sasse voted for and helped shape the economy in a way that enriched corporations and hollowed out the working class, whom he now berates for their lack of participation in his idealized social contract

@mattyglesias 2020 was not a favorable Republican climate, yet Collins handily beats Sara Gideon (the centrist Dem candidate). Mills (the centrist Dem choice) was not going to beat Collins. Make of that what you will, but you should adjust your priors accordingly.

@churrascooooo This individual has a PhD from Yale, served in the Dept. of Health and Human Services and argued the status quo pre-ACA was preferable to the ACA. After a decade of similar votes he was rewarded with a no show UF President gig, and enriched his buddies.alligator.org/article/2024/0…

@mattyglesias look at the R2, the model fits pretty nicely! What it misses is outcomes, i.e. are we healthier than lower spenders? I think the answer is fairly clear we are not. So the question is what are we spending on that doesn't improve health outcomes.

@Rightanglenews As it should be, one person one vote is hard to argue against. The electoral college disproportionately weights the vote of individuals from smaller states.

BREAKING - Outrage is erupting across Virginia after Abigail Spanberger signed HB965 into law, effectively rendering Virginians’ presidential votes null and void, with the measure handing the states electoral votes to the national popular vote winner regardless of states results.
