@funzoch @homemadehooplah If today's copyright laws existed in the 1960s, Bob Dylan's "theft" of other musicians song arrangements and The Beatles and Led Zeppelin "stealing" the riffs and new sounds of other English songwriters at the time would've stopped them all in their tracks; drowned in lawsuits.

The only people who are pro ending copyright are those who never had the vision or talent to create anything of value.

In the 1960s, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin all "stole" the song arrangements of other musicians, or new sounds or entire songs, and spoke openly about this "borrowing" which would be illegal under today's copyright regimes. They had far more Creative Freedom than now.

@DarrylMason @homemadehooplah I would argue that removing copyright would be the destruction of culture. It will lead to less creativity. Why spend your time & skills making something if others can just steal it, reproduce it or use it without permission?

@funzoch @homemadehooplah Yes, and they continue to profit for decades while lobbying for copyright to be extended. Locking away films, music and writing for a century from the Public Domain, so wealthy people can keep profiting, is the destruction of culture.

@DarrylMason @homemadehooplah But those investment firms will have paid (i.e. invested in) someone for the rights to those songs. The ownership may have changed hands several times but the original creator would have been compensated at some point and chosen to pass the ownership on.

@homemadehooplah Songs from 1930s owned by investment firms cost $10,000s to use in films or TV shows. For many of the songs, the original writers, singers and producers (and their children) are long dead. Mega-wealthy who own 10,000s of recordings from the 1930s and 1940s didn't create them.
