@semiozz @gruber @aaronsw Of course, but I thought Gruber wrote the Perl script himself? I sort of remember this stuff from the early days of blogging

The 2025 Summer Airbnb.com/Release is the best tech keynote I've seen in a while. I have no upcoming travel or need for the product yet it made me update the app and wanting to use it. A few reflections why I thought it was awesome:

Imagine if Bret Victor had access to Sonnet in ~2010. There should be a research lab exploring new mediums of human-computer interaction built on this exact premise.

@snowmaker > we called it YC research, but it eventually got renamed open AI This is weird though, because it's incorrect — right? Or am I missing something? From the Wikipedia page for YC:

Paul Buchheit, who was there when OpenAI started as YC Research, looks back on how crazy the idea was and how insane it is that it actually worked: "And so we had this sort of like loony moonshot idea to start at the time we called it YC research, but it eventually got renamed open AI. We were going to take on Google with a small nonprofit, which doesn't quite pass the laugh test. Right? Like, like how is this little nonprofit going to, going to be the one that actually develops AGI when the other companies have dramatically more resources. And then here we are 10 years later, it actually happened. And at the time it just seemed incredibly implausible. Like no one would have believed it. Yet here we are on, I think basically the best timeline, like we actually delivered it. We have, An open and competitive market with, I would say at least six foundation models that are competing, including an open source one from meta. And I think that's our best shot for preserving freedom is, choice and competition. " - @paultoo

When I rebuilt a class website at MIT, I wanted it to last 15 years after I left. I used static HTML/CSS, minimal JS. Python / Flask backend. SQLite DB. It handles users, grades, recitations, lectures. Has a custom built CMS. 5 years later, no one's broken it yet.
Omar Rizwan@rsnous

how many 'modern' tools will run 30 years in the future, compared to plain HTML? will you even be able to build the site? (are these tools even intended for such a periodic cycle, or are they made for Facebook and Google teams of people continuously maintaining their engine?)

@rsms Congrats! That's very exciting. I remember long ago downloading the the _first_ preview 😉 At the time, I believe some primitive shapes would be drawn on screen.

We're about to send out the first early-access invitations to Playbit, starting with 100 randomly selected email addresses from the early-access signup form on our website. If you have the curiosity, feel brave and are comfortable with computer programming, let me know if you'd like to get access. This first release *only works if you have an arm Mac.* We essentially give you a mac app that is a virtual machine which runs Playbit (think: a video game in full-screen mode.) This makes it easy try. In future early-access releases we will increase compatibility to other architectures and platforms. It will be a *very* early release where most of the exciting and interesting features are promised for the future are absent. You can sign up for early access here: playb.it
