🧵 Thread: Governance failures and misplaced priorities at @MSHSL Attributable to Sen. Michael Kreun (R-Blaine) — @michaelkreun: “Staff at MSHSL must follow the law. The MSHSL has no authority to question a homeschool family’s status if they are in compliance with state law and if the resident district itself accepts that student as a homeschool student. The law is clear that the student has a right to engage in extracurricular activities for their home school district. This has nothing to do with a student transferring schools for competitive advantage. This is about treating homeschool students fairly under the law.”

Homeschool student athletes reportedly reinstated after row with state high school league All four Minnesota students are homeschooled, use a private curriculum, and are a part of Athletic Performance Homeschool Cooperative, a network of homeschool families with student athletes. A baseball trainer who works with the students warned that the entire situation “raises a broader concern.” “While we were fortunate to have the platform and relationships necessary to advocate effectively, many Minnesota families do not have that same voice or access,” he said. “It is troubling to consider how similar situations may unfold for families who lack the ability to generate visibility or apply pressure.”

Just the tip of the iceberg regarding serious concerns with @MSHSL governance and decision-making. Under the leadership of Bob Madison, the League is facing growing scrutiny over actions and public statements that raise legitimate questions about professionalism, transparency, and conflicts of interest—including oversight of eligibility matters while having a son competing at Mounds View High School. Most concerning is the League’s recent position on homeschool athlete eligibility, despite: • Eligibility determinations already affirmed by district attorneys • Clear authority of the Minnesota Department of Education • Guidance from the HBEA • Minnesota state statutes protecting homeschool families At what point does @MSHSL stop overreaching beyond its scope and start focusing on its actual responsibility—serving student-athletes? Two immediate areas that demand action: 1️⃣ Player safety: Adopt and enforce the Pitch Smart model statewide. Allowing pitchers to exceed 200+ pitches over a few days (which occurred last season) is unacceptable. 2️⃣ Competitive integrity: Enforce residency rules consistently and crack down on fraudulent addresses used to stack “super teams” across all sports. Student-athletes deserve leadership focused on fairness, safety, and development—not politics or selective enforcement. @MSHSBCA @StarTribune @KSTP @kare11 @WCCO @FOX9 @AlphaNews
