@TheKentAcorn Here on Ynys Môn/Anglesey we have lots of Cupressus macrocarpa/Monterey Cypress. The Marquis of Anglesey planted an avenue at Plas Newydd (1916). I suspect the host of others may have copied the fashionable nobility. Of course the avenue trees grew tall: the specimens far wider

I wonder if the keen English gardener ever thought that the fashionable ‘Californian Giant’ they planted as a sapling in 1865 would eventually take over their whole garden 🤭🌲

@FlowerdewBob Olive oil definitely poor for chips: smoke point 200C Palm oil is good with smokepoint 240C, similar to dripping. I've also used cottonseed and coconut oil. Both useless.

This year the phlox cuttings are looking better than they have for years. Careful management of the stock plants to get them in the right condition at the right time pays off

@Organic_pam On the North Wales coast, we have been mystified by the talk of temperatures over 20°C for the past few days. No sense of “strawberries and cream” weather here; more like get your hood up 🌧️

Watering leek plants in on "Home" Field, on "Allewells" we had to irrigate to be able to work land for actually planting #leeks. We've had but 200 mm for the whole first six months of '25 If my calculations are right that equates to a mere 8" #rainfall in half a year

Cutting #celery this morning. A disappointing crop, too dry though we got round with irrigation the best we could, but it was too little.

We cleared #Anglesey of grey squirrels. Our wild red squirrel population doubled, then we boosted genetic variation to get an x8 increase. We rescued red squirrel from the brink of extinction and put them back into peoples lives. #RedSquirrelAwarenessWeek [📷H Rowlands]

Making start on #tunnel lettuce for @UnicornGrocery Lawrence is back giving us 2 days wk. With him on land work there's time for other chores, like sorting #irrigation woes. It's the inverter AGAIN, a recurrent theme. In meantime the diesel pump stands in, disrupting the peace

@FlowerdewBob I suspect it would be valued more if it was pruned annually. I’ve never had one (currently don’t have a garden) but suspect a hard prune after flowering might work Ribes is another spring flowering shrub, most often neglected (horticulturally) 😊

When we were clearing my mum’s house I grabbed a few of these knives. Made in Sheffield. Probably originally from my grandmother’s house and dating from late 1930s. And never was there a finer device for spreading butter.

@coileyparjley It's hard to do that on my phone though 🤣. My point is that compost made mostly of unrotted twigs doesn't work well.

If we can make compost like this in a corner of our field, why does commercial "peat free" compost seem to be mostly twigs? It doesn't hold moisture & contains almost no nutrients. I don't get what's hard about making decent compost 😡
