@NAUPT582 #PT582 #DS I don't believe pre-hab should be mandatory; I think it should be a common piece of total joint rehabilitation. Like Dr. McCallum mentioned in class, pts often experience worse pain immediately following surgery, so building them up beforehand is beneficial.

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #MR Yes, PTs should be able to make the return to sport (RTS) decision in each state. PTs are well trained to treat PCS and are arguably more equipped to check in with athletes following their RTS to monitor progress or lack thereof.

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #KS I think that the average PT is well versed in nutrition. Perhaps lectures on proper nutrition in a class like Evidence Based practice could be included in our program so that we may formally bestow this knowledge upon our patients!

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #AB When possible, I think that we should invite patients to use the pools and equipment like Alter-G treadmills and recumbent stationary bikes that our clinics have to offer so they may warm up prior to their appointments.

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #BW (2/2) I think I would implement overground plyometric training for pts with risk of osteoporosis, but for pts that benefit from the aquatic environment like those with MS, I would ease their movement with aquatic plyometric training.

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #LG Once patients know the diagonal concepts of D1 and D2 we can teach them ways to perform these PNF patterns at home with therabands. This may not be as effective without our contact/cuing, but it is a way to refamiliarize pts with functional patterns.

@TommyLittlePT I like how this article asserts that every health care provider should promote physical activity to every patient. Improving the nation's health starts here.

#PT582 #ES PT's often operate in secondary and tertiary prevention and provide their patients with the groundwork to participate in physical activity by minimizing or eliminating physical barriers and impairments that limit patients’ ability to participate in active lifestyles

@katburdettSPT I agree, Kat. I think trial and error can be useful as well, as long as we remember to get feedback and truly investigate what interests the patient!

#ES #PT582 This is a tough discussion because it is really difficult to change peoples habits in order to get them to exercise. Choosing specific exercises that individuals enjoy and giving them a reasonable goal to achieve each week by doing this exercise is one way to do this

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #ES Exercise-boosting strategies PTs can use include written or electronic reminders/motivational notes, activity logs, educating patients on exercise's benefits, and motiv. interviewing (bit.ly/2xPJaOH). These are largely studied in the short/mid-term.

@llg336 Interesting article, Laura! Do you think PTs should promote prehabilitation and strengthening of specific muscle groups that are prone to overuse injuries in sports and weightlifting?

#PT582 #JH According to this article, adolescent strength training injuries are attributed to equipment misuse, poor technique, & lack of supervision. This highlights the role we play in education and ensuring safe and supervised training settings. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

#PT582 #ES I think this is when it is crucial for us to invest in our patients, understand their goals, and ask about their interests. The integration of this information can help identify activities that each patient would actually enjoy & regularly engage in.

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #ES I think that encouraging PA should become a part of our treatment plan. As PTs, we provide secondary preventative measures so physical activity should be a part of their treatment since it's shown to improve many of the conditions our patients will have.

@kegbert65 According to this article, the American College of Rheumatology recommends that providers offer counseling for weight loss and physical activity to adults with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Do you think this is something that should be standardized despite being a sensitive topic?

#PT582 #ES Physical therapy clinics that provide a gym environment with various health classes or training that patients can attend after therapy is one way we can promote higher activity levels.
