The other day, I had a conversation with @GoldenGatsby that took me down memory lane. I first heard about Bitcoin in 2011, but I didn’t fully get it until a good friend of mine ran a small experiment in 2012. He was in San Francisco. I was in Buenos Aires, under tight capital controls. He asked me to open a wallet on @blockchain and sent me 5,000 BTC. Right after I sent them back minus 1 BTC that I kept at his request to play with. The whole round trip took less than an hour. The total cost just 0.0005 BTC. No banks. No middlemen. No questions asked. That’s when I saw it. This wasn’t just a new form of money. It was the Internet of Money or as I later labeled the Internet of Value. It carried the same open, neutral, permissionless principles that shaped the early Web. But this time, it wasn’t information being freed, it was value. And for Argentina and Latin America, that meant hope. We’ve lived through it all. Hyperinflation in the ’80s. Frozen bank accounts in 2001. Savings wiped out by devaluation. And governments that always found a way to take more. Here, we know how financial injustice looks like. And we know how freedom feels like when we finally touch it.
