Since 1987, the Anne O'Brien Prize has been awarded annually to the final year physiotherapy students who achieve the highest performance in Clinical Assessment. In 2000, it was renamed in honour of the Society's late President, Anne O'Brien, in recognition of her outstanding commitment to undergraduate clinical practice. At @UNFPA's side event on the margins of the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana, I joined Kazakhstan’s Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova and UNFPA Regional Director @BauerFlorence to discuss how climate risks are affecting the health of women and young people in Central Asia. The data leave no room for complacency. Across 23 countries in our Region, nearly 400 children die each year from heat-related causes - with a significant share in Central Asia. In the Aral Sea region, nearly 1 in 4 women of reproductive age experiences repeated pregnancy loss. I stressed that our response needs to match the scale of the risk - with stronger heat-health action, health workers trained to recognize & respond to climate risks affecting mothers, newborns and children, and more investment in prevention.
