Sad news with the loss of another of our last D-Day veterans. Bill Wake, 99, from #Northumberland was an 18 year old @RoyalNavy medical orderly, treating men evacuated from the Normandy beaches - a journey he made more than twenty times on and after June 6th, 1944. #DDay80 #WW2

Private John Jackson (pictured) was one such reservist. Immediately recalled from civilian life, he was dead by Christmas 1914. The pre-war regular army had been "almost wiped out". #WW1
