Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war.  Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace. I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe. I have been in contact with our Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution. Additionally, I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: you are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers, and community leaders. You will be safe here.

Today, New York City subway and bus fares rose from $2.90 to $3. I spent the evening riding the only free bus in the city, the Q70, to hear what a fare free ride has meant for New Yorkers. What was clear right away was the relief this one bus line gives working class New Yorkers. Imagine if every bus felt like this.

🚨 UPDATE: After 14 hours, the crew of 10+ Somali men at the Quality Learing Center GAVE UP trying to figure out how to remove stickers off a window, so they made their address spelling correction using PRINTER PAPER 🤣 Safe to say they never leared how to do that in school.
Nick Sortor@nicksortor

🚨 NOW: TEN masked Somalis came out of the Quality Learing Center here in Minneapolis and attempted to fix their misspelled address sign—but they FAILED 🤣 They spotted me, begun pacing around my car, and taking pictures, but as soon as I tried to chat, they ran away. Maybe they’ll finally get that sign fixed tomorrow when they “open” at 2pm 😂

I have just spent 13 days travelling through South Africa with a well-known Dutch friend for research he is doing. From the largest cities to remote Karoo villages, the Bushveld and the Free State, a few perceptions from a foreigner's perspective were clear: 1. South Africa has so much more potential than is currently being exploited. 2. The people are genuinely friendly. Service from petrol stations to supermarkets and restaurants is so much more relaxed, friendly and informal than in Europe. 3. The landscapes, light, routes, nature, animals and communities offer something that you will find nowhere else, but decay (especially with infrastructure) is harming the experience throughout and therefore also hindering growth in tourism in some regions. 4. Most of the South African countryside continues to deteriorate year after year with impassable roads, a huge amount of rubbish dumped everywhere and of course the increase in squatter camps, poverty, unemployment, drug abuse and alcoholism. 5. South Africans often underestimate the mutual friendliness between each other and how a unique way of interacting contributes to a quality lifestyle that is a luxury in many countries where people have become hyper-individualistic. 6. South African supermarkets are among the best in the world with an abundance of affordable fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, etc. and in general South Africans can be grateful for a large supply of good quality locally produced food. 7. The increase in obesity, accompanied by a sharp increase in fast food restaurants and deteriorating eating habits is obvious to foreigners who visit the country sporadically. 8. Urbanisation is out of control. The extent of the increase in squatter camps and the associated problems with crime, pollution, poor service delivery and demographic change are physically visible and should be of great concern to every South African. 9. There is clearly a sharp increase in foreigners (especially from other African countries, Asia and the Middle East) in South Africa and this is visible across the country with shops owned by Pakistanis and people from places like Nigeria, Somalia, China and Bangladesh springing up like mushrooms across the country. With so many South Africans unemployed, this influx cannot be sustainable. 10. Afrikaners have a deep love for our country but feel under immense pressure across the country due to crime, discrimination which makes it impossible for young Afrikaners to find work and thus leads to emigration, the lack of infrastructure which makes economic activities difficult, but especially alienation due to a feeling that the government hates Afrikaners and is actively working against Afrikaners. Afrikaners can and want to play a major role in building our country, but must be allowed to do so with certainty about safety, education, language and cultural rights. These are my ten (out of many more) conclusions from impressions of a Dutch friend from 13 days of chatting and meeting with many people across South Africa and thousands of kilometers traveled.

Can we stop this Ben ? Honestly, rugby is probably better with the Springboks winning every World Cup, because their fans refuse to shut up about it. They’ll bring up the RWC in conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with rugby. you could be talking about groceries, and somehow it turns into “4 cups” and “champions of the world.” It’s chaos, but it keeps the sport alive. Just imagine, If France or the All Blacks had won the last two tournaments, nobody would even remember at this point. The buzz would’ve died in a week, and 90% of these South African accounts wouldn’t even exist. Social media would be so quiet you could hear crickets. So yeah, I’m genuinely hoping the Boks will get away with these once again and win again in 2027. Rugby needs that constant noise and nobody provides it better (or louder) than Springbok fans. And I am here for it ! 🏆🏆🏆🏆 #Springboks #Rugby
Ben Smith@bensmithrugby

The Interference that cost the All Blacks the World Cup. Eben Etzebeth, retreating from an offside position inside his own 22, obstructs an All Blacks’ pass with a 5-on-2 overlap with no defending fullback. Deliberately ran through the passing lane to kill the play. He was penalised. That was all. He saves two-to-four points for the Springboks in a game that finished 12-11. The punishment does not fit the crime: Offside interference like this doesn’t warrant a yellow card, but a one-handed intercept attempt from an onside position does. This is cynical cheating of the highest order. Etzebeth should have been binned right then and there. The All Blacks were robbed of a try scoring opportunity they finish 80% of the time. This play and the knock-down by Etzebeth from the France quarter-final were disguised thievery.

@Salahuddin4yub1 @wing_kuang Please dont spin this that bamboo is non flammable. It can withstand around 300 degrees. Also the bamboo in picture is freshly cut while scaffholding is dry dead bamboo. There are plenty of pictures of the bamboo burning.

@wing_kuang Bamboo is naturally strong & non flammable. We in Malaysia and other asian countries cook special rice them it for 3-5 hrs. Bamboo is Not the culprit. Try Green Plastic netting, Try the polystryene they put on the external part of the windows, supposedly to protect the glass

@Alphaa__x @finnlau_cd Hi Alpha, it is strange how we are going so full on to defend bamboo. I have seen people say that steel is more flammable than bamboo 🙄. Steel is less flammable and therefore should be used. We have had multiple fires this year at construction sites.

Hi Finn, thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response — I agree with most of what you said. Bamboo does have some natural fire-resistant qualities under normal conditions, but as we saw a few days ago, once the fire intensified, flaming bamboo began falling from very high levels within 10–15 minutes. My guess is that the nylon straps holding the scaffolding together lost integrity quickly, and once that happened, everything started failing at the same time. Of course, bamboo has its advantages as a scaffolding material, but in this case the drawbacks clearly outweighed the benefits. Would metal scaffolding have completely prevented the disaster? Probably not. Like you pointed out, the mesh fabric played a major role in spreading the fire. But it’s also true that burning bamboo debris falling outside the lobby created an additional hazard and blocked people from exiting the building. So yes, I agree with your points overall, but the reality is bamboo can only withstand around 250–300°C, while metal scaffolding can handle temperatures closer to 650°C. Bamboo absolutely has its place in certain projects, but for large-scale developments like this, the setup should be divided into sections and built with proper metal scaffolding. I also don’t see the benefit of wrapping an entire building — let alone eight buildings — in a single continuous mesh. There clearly weren’t enough workers to take advantage of such a massive setup anyway.

@mfriedma @Alphaa__x @finnlau_cd I think what he is saying is these are hazards to people evacuating. If we use steel it wont look like this within 10 minutes. We just need the steel to hold up for 30 odd minutes to all people to evacuate.

@aspyhere @st0ic_9 You cant be serious? not sure a roll out ladder will be of any use. The fire started at ground level and apread up the building. If it starts above you , you can simply use the stairs.

@st0ic_9 This is why i'll always advocate for people to have some sort of roll out ladder for high rise apartment buildings like this. Even if you cant buy some, maybe pitch in and buy one or two and keep them on several different floors so there's some option in case of fire :( <3

Ok, A lot of people still misunderstand Telegram gifts, so let me break it down simply. Back in the 2010s, VK.com (biggest social network in Russia, also created by @durov ) introduced digital gifts. You could buy a rose, a heart, a badge and send it to friends profile. Rare VK gifts became collectibles. Limited editions, holiday drops, legendary sets. People traded them, flexed them, even sold them. Not because of the image itself, but because of what it represented - attention, status, fanhood, limited supply. Telegram gifts operate on the same principle. Now take Khabib as an example. Fans buy shirts, hats, posters, signed gloves. They wear his merch because they're proud. Telegram gifts are that but digital. You display it on your profile like you'd wear a hoodie offline. People saw high auction prices and got emotional. But that’s literally how auctions work. If you want to be the one who owns it first, you bid higher. Price is set by demand, not by the platform. And Khabib fans wanted it -badly. This isn't a scam. It's digital culture. We already trade skins, Fortnite outfits, Roblox items, CS:GO knives. A Telegram gift is the same social signal inside a messaging app millions use daily. You’re not paying for the animation. You’re paying for what it means. Scarcity + demand + identity = value.
khabib nurmagomedov@TeamKhabib

The auction has ended and all Papakha’s been sold! Appreciate everyone who participated in it, and become a holder of this great and exclusive digital gift, gift with value, that you can share with your friends and loved ones. Thank you for trust! Only on Telegram
