Its funny how much the whole "strawberry" thing, which turned out to be o1-preview, was dismissed as overhyped at launch when it is clear in retrospect that it was way underhyped. A direct line from models unable to do basic math to solving unresolved math problems in 18 months.

Today, we share a breakthrough on the planar unit distance problem, a famous open question first posed by Paul Erdős in 1946. For nearly 80 years, mathematicians believed the best possible solutions looked roughly like square grids. An OpenAI model has now disproved that belief, discovering an entirely new family of constructions that performs better. This marks the first time AI has autonomously solved a prominent open problem central to a field of mathematics.

What hardware actually powers open-source AI? Not benchmarks. Not vendor marketing. Real-world community usage. We’re launching @huggingface Hardware: → trending GPUs & CPUs → VRAM distribution → inference hardware trends → what the OSS AI ecosystem really runs on

There is this strange idea that “techno-optimism” means “liking the maximum amount of all technology all the time,” as though being a “fan of music” meant “preferring all music genres played at maximum volume all the time.” Love of a thing means more discerning taste, not less.

Introducing a revival of PapersWithCode! As @ilyasut said, we're back to the "age of research". Hence, it's important to share research and build on each other's work. > find SOTA per domain, not just LLMs > leaderboards > methods > all parsed at scale using AI agents.
