Xi Jinping told Trump that Putin may come to regret the war in Ukraine — FT The conversation reportedly touched on the situation at the front and the current deadlock in the war. Xi was described as speaking more directly than he usually does in public. FT also reports that the comment came amid intensified Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian infrastructure. Putin is due to arrive in Beijing today for a meeting with Xi Jinping, accompanied by a large delegation, including heads of Rosneft, Gazprom, and the Central Bank. According to Bloomberg, one of the key topics of the talks will be the “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline.

🤭 Putin is heading to China for the fifth time to persuade Beijing to build the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline The Kremlin says the new gas pipeline project will once again be “discussed in detail” during Putin’s visit to Beijing. Russia has been trying to secure the deal for nearly a decade. Since the start of the full-scale war, the project has become even more important for the Kremlin as Moscow desperately searches for a replacement for the European market. But Beijing is in no hurry. The main issue is the gas price: China reportedly wants to buy Russian gas at near-domestic Russian rates — far below what Europe used to pay. Bloomberg sources say the final decision rests entirely with China. At this point, Power of Siberia 2 is starting to look less like a strategic partnership and more like a toxic relationship where one side keeps texting first.

Politico: Senate Republicans and Donald Trump persuade Sen. John Fetterman to switch parties or at least become an independent to ensure Republicans retain power in the chamber Trump has made the sell, offering his patented total and complete endorsement plus a financial windfall to the Pennsylvanian. A handful of Senate Republicans are also gently feeling out Fetterman and responding to his concerns over the prospect of defecting from the Democratic Party

@LidlGB has Alpen Fest week been axed? It's unheard of to get to May and there still hasn't been one. I might have to switch entirely from Lidl to @AldiUK at this rate. The special weeks just aren't what they used to be.

Jimmy Kimmel responds to Melania and Donald Trump after they called for his firing over a joke he made about them: “It was 5 days ago. It was a pretend roast. I said our first lady, Melania’s here. Look at her, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow—which obviously was a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on her face every time they’re together. It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am. It was not, by any stretch of the definition, a call to assassination. And they know that.”

@LordBalthazar85 @trwsenti Tbf, I just checked rents where I first lived and they're about £900 for the equivalent. So slightly more than doubled, but salaries haven't quite doubled, but of course all expenses have gone up in that time, too, especially utilities. So still fairly grim, but not hopeless.

@goitsagch @trwsenti Rent hasn’t tripled, he’s just being absurd. £1,900 a month is a ridiculous sum to think you’re entitled to spend on an accommodation and bills at 21 with no work experience plus a generous travel allowance and then claim poverty.

Rent in any UK city worth living in: £1,200. Council tax, gas, electric, water, internet: £420. Train or petrol to get to work: £250. Bills alone eat £1,870 of it. Leaves you £106 a month for food, clothes, socialising and any kind of life. This is what a 'good graduate job' looks like in 2026 after 3 years at uni and £50K of student debt. How did we let them sell this to us?

🚨 Orbán continues to hold the EU hostage. “No oil — no money” The heavily defeated prime minister writes on X that Ukraine is ready to resume oil supplies via the “Druzhba” pipeline as early as Monday — but only if Hungary stops blocking the EU’s €90 billion loan. But Orbán has no intention of meeting these conditions. “Hungary’s position has not changed: no oil — no money. Once supplies are restored, Budapest will no longer stand in the way of approving the loan,” the prime minister says. He is expected to leave his post in early May. Not much time left.

This a computer, and you likely own one. It's a hydraulic analog computer. It’s essentially a machined analog computer that computes with fluid instead of electronics: pump pressure is routed through passages that act like wires, while spool valves, springs, orifices, and check balls perform the equivalents of comparators, logic gates, delays, and one-way elements. What it “calculates” is the machine’s current operating state, whether conditions have crossed a threshold to justify changing state, how strongly to apply each output, and how quickly to make that transition without instability or shock. It does this by continuously balancing forces—pressure on different valve areas against spring preload and feedback pressure—so each valve shifts only when one hydraulic condition outweighs another, while restrictions and chambers add timing and smoothing. In plain English, it is a real-time fluidic state machine that solves “if this pressure is greater than that one, route flow here; otherwise hold, delay, soften, or override” entirely through geometry and oil. They're used in every car with an automatic transmission, where it makes choices like what gear to be in and how hard to apply clutches, etc.... And some dude worked it all out on paper back in the 1960s.

The prompt persona swap is genuinely underused. Generator mode vs reviewer mode with different system prompts is basically adversarial prompting without the overhead. What kind of things does the review prompt catch that the writing one misses? Style issues, security, or something else?

Software engineers are the happiest people on Earth now. They pay $100/month for Claude Code to do the work. Their employer pays them $10,000/month for the results. $9,900 profit for sipping coffee and talking to AI. The funniest part? Not a single dev with a full-time job will ever admit this publicly What a time to be alive.

Too on point not to share, “Aussie reply to Trump rant about NATO not being there for us. Mate. You run a country with 600,000 homeless people sleeping on the street tonight. A country where 40% of adults can't cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment and people are rationing it to survive. A country where medical debt is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy. A country where women are dying in hospital car parks because doctors are too scared of abortion laws to treat a miscarriage. You lock up more of your own citizens than any nation on earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. The land of the free has 2 million people in cages, and a quarter of them haven't even been convicted of anything. They're just too poor to make bail. Your life expectancy is going backwards. You're the only developed nation where that's happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba's. Your kids do active shooter drills between maths and English while you sell the gunmaker's stock to your mates. Your minimum wage hasn't moved in 15 years. You've got teachers working 2 jobs and veterans sleeping under bridges and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that didn't attack you. And you’ve got a convicted felon, adjudicating raping, paedophile protecting, porn star shagging insurrectionist running the biggest dumpster fire war campaign since the Taliban thanked you very much for losing again. And you're calling Greenland poorly run? Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody goes bankrupt there because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because their insurance said no. "NATO wasn't there when we needed them." When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn't even in NATO and we still showed up. For 20 years. And you pulled out at 2am without telling anyone and left them to deal with the mess. So maybe before you start calling other countries poorly run, have a look at your own backyard, you spray-tanned aluminium siding salesman. The only thing poorly run in this picture is your fucking mouth. Credit (borrowed from) Jim Scroggins - original author 📷 unknown”

@goitsagch @therook_ @vivoplt The problem with AI reviewing AI code: same blind spots. If the generator missed a security boundary, the reviewer often will too — they're working from the same training data. Best setup I've seen: AI catches the mechanical stuff, human catches the intent/architecture stuff.

BREAKING: The first round of direct talks has concluded. Both delegations are now exchanging written texts to confirm points agreed upon. Iran's four non-negotiable conditions (Tasnim): 1. Full sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz 2. Complete war reparations 3. Unconditional release of blocked assets 4. Durable ceasefire across the entire West Asia region Iran's conditions appear to be even more maximalist than before the war.
