Just left the White House Correspondents' Dinner after shots were fired in the building. Everyone near me hid under tables and are now safe, including President Trump. While details are still emerging, one thing is clear: Political violence is rising in our country. We need to do more than simply tone down polarizing rhetoric– we need to return to engaging in sensible policy debates rather than engaging in constant hyperbole. Thankful for the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies for stepping up tonight and quickly detaining the shooter.

The bigger question is not what schedule cannabis should fall under, but where these people get the right to tell others what they can do with their own body. I didn’t see that right given to them in the Constitution.

Schedule III is not some bold breakthrough. It is still the government admitting marijuana has medical use while keeping the larger contradiction in place. It should be fully legal. No one should be going to jail, losing years of their life, or carrying a record because of a plant. Rescheduling may help with research and taxes, but it still leaves a lot of people paying the price for laws that never made sense to begin with.

When I was Governor, I signed into law the elimination of state income taxes on Social Security. I’m doing more of the same in the Senate. Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts, 88% of American seniors no longer have to pay federal income taxes on Social Security. That’s about 265,000 Nebraska seniors who won’t have to pay any income taxes on their Social Security benefits.
