@MidwestGolfJake Amazing how much easier golf is when you either have a partner with a ball in play or you know you have a partner who will put it in play if you don’t. I was reminded of that last week as well.

On Saturday I was reminded that Best Shot Jake is a much better golfer than Play His Own Ball Jake. I purposely hit a high draw, a bullet draw, and a fairway finder. I made some clutch putts. When we had to chip, I got us close on a few occasions. I hit the prettiest knock down 7 iron into a green. On 18 I hit my approach to 4 feet. It was a ton of fun! Should I quit regular golf and my job and just print shop credit by playing Best Shots all over the country?

Definitely. Their only incentive to do it is money (which we seem to know they don’t really care about), so I’d much prefer they charge $15 for sandwiches and beers instead of go down the crazy merch route if that’s actually what it is. Seems like they are making their way down the road to changing something special. I hope they turn around.

@golfinklings I feel like whoever is in charge of merch is somehow disconnected from the rest of Augusta.

Master’s Merch Hauls - Yay or Nay? A big topic when it comes to Masters overkill this year is that the merch is EVERYWHERE. It’s plastered all over social media. Egg salad hats. Gnomes. Dollar amounts. It seems like pure commercialism drove the Masters more this year than any other.

On the way home from our golf week in Myrtle Beach. I played mostly terrible golf, but still had a great time with friends. My team almost won the Friday team competition. We needed to birdie the 27th hole (a par 5) of the day in a 4-man scramble. We had 2 guys that can hit it 300+. We made par after playing great all day. Needed to get to 7-under on the scramble nine holes and we could only get to 6 under.😫😆 My friend’s team won, and he’s been trying to win as a captain since we started doing this about 10 years ago. After spending a week surrounded by the golfing public at a somewhat upper-end public course I have some thoughts about the state of the industry and what is becoming the norm for behavior at a golf course. I’ll share later in the week if I get some time to collect my thoughts. Hint: it isn’t good. I played King’s North at Myrtle Beach National for the first time last year and liked it. Played it three more times last week and I really like it. Here are some pictures from this year……

Annual Myrtle Beach golf trip starts tomorrow. The week culminates with a team competition on Friday and the first “major” of the year over the weekend on the Tour that I run with 3 other guys, but some get into town throughout the week to play more golf. I’m driving down tomorrow afternoon but a few of the guys will be leaving early and playing Panthers Run. The rest of the week will be: Tuesday: Glen Dornoch - we’ll have 12 guys. Probably play skins and pins and most guys will do a 2-man best ball Nassau within the groups or something like that. Will be my first time playing this course. Wednesday: Eagles Nest. Same as above. Also will be my first time seeing the course. Thursday: Practice round at Kings North. We’ll have 16 guys playing. Skins, pins, and probably a 2-man best ball competition with everyone plus whatever guys want to do within their groups. Friday: Arrowhead - Four of us will draft 4 man teams for a 27 hole team competition. The four man teams split up into 2 teams of 2. Play 6 holes of best ball, 6 holes of modified alternate shot, and 6 holes of shamble. Add both 2 man scores for the 4man team total. Top 2 teams play a 4man 9-hole scramble to see who wins and the other two teams do the same to see who’s third. Winning team gets ~$400 per person plus something (head cover, shoe bag, etc) with the Tour’s logo and 2nd and 3rd get some $$ too. Saturday and Sunday: Kings North - our first “major” of the year. We have 24 guys playing for a purse of about $4k. Winner will get ~$2k and we pay 25% of the field. We also do side pots for skins, pins, and low scorers on each 9 both days. I’m staying in a house with 8 or 10 other guys. Golf will generally be in the morning (unless we decide on an emergency 9) and the rest of the days are dedicated to The Masters, good food and drink, mini golf (loser buys ice cream), PGA Tour Superstore, card games, etc. Some pictures from my round at King’s North last year…..

Not even the worst golf related text he’s sent me. #2 - from the Ryder Cup he was “forced” (in his words) to attend “I’m with a bunch of guys and they are talking about going to a place called Cypress Point. Is that a good course?” Yes! Can you ask them to take me there? “Haha, no I’m not asking them to do that.” #1 - “I was forced to take a golf lesson today and this poor woman had to put up with me for an hour” followed by a picture of him and Rose Zhang.

What would you pay to attend the Masters? The Masters has officially surpassed The Super Bowl and World Cup as the most expensive sports ticket. $2,000 for practice round $16,000 for Thursday $8,000 for Sunday. Why? The Masters has started cracking down on resellers, so the supply is very limited. Resellers have been losing their ticket privileges if caught, so now it’s happening only on true black market channels. People have wanted Augusta to stop resellers for years. But there is a downside. Now if you don’t win the lottery, you are screwed. Almost no chance of ever attending. Before you could at least bucket list it and do it once. Not sure if this is good or bad for the fans, though I get why Augusta is doing it.

Masters patrons allowed BEHIND the 15th green? Back in the 1950’s, that was the case! I love this photo showing the crowd of patrons just FEET from the back edge of the 15th green. Also love the TV camera on top of the car too. 🧐 #TheMasters #AugustaNational

I feel bad for her. But if she can’t get it figured out on the range to the point she can swing a club in a normal amount of time then I’m not sure she should be out there. It’s not fair to those playing with her. And I’m not someone who cares nearly as much about slow play as a lot of people on here.

I'll admit, I replied to a post yesterday and made a joke. I feel kinda bad about my joke now. Does this statement change your opinion on the slow play incident from yesterday? I feel bad for her for sure. I sympathize even. But I still think it should be a penalty.

“Do you think I want to do it intentionally? Of course not.” Yesterday, Bailey Shoemaker went viral for a slow play incident. Today, she explained why she is just staying focused on her recovery, and playing Augusta National tomorrow.

Are you ready to lose some driver distance? In 2030 you will be. If you hit driver 220 yards you will lose 4.5 yards. An elite pro like Rory will lose 12 yards. This ball rollback is a start, but imo not nearly enough. Rory going from 325 to 315 won’t change almost anything. Which means another rollback or tech change will have to come. IMO they should just do more all at once. Rip off the bandaid. Great stuff from Golf Digest. Full read in next post.

@Top100Rick @MidwestGolfJake When the USGA becomes a department in the Executive Branch of the federal government they’ll definitely be able to make Tour players use different equipment. Until then, I’m not sure if they’ll have enough leverage to make a change on Tour (or possibly anywhere else).

@MidwestGolfJake No but pros do and golf would be more interesting and more courses would be available for pro play with a true rollback.

You will only lose distance if you comply with the new rules. And I think the USGA is a lot closer to losing its place in the game than it is to getting everyone - or anyone - to start using new equipment that almost no one wants outside of a few people who scream loudly on this platform. I think there is some support among golf fans for bifurcation. But I don’t think anyone on Tour wants it, so I’m not even sure that’s possible at this point.

I can remember having 5 birdies in a round several times. Not sure if I’ve ever had more. I never really kept track of that stuff until I used apps for scoring, and I still don’t pay too much attention. Not sure on longest birdie streak but I’ve gone birdie-hole in one-birdie two times.

Follow-up to Lydia Ko making 12 birdies in a single round yesterday. What is your personal best for birdies in a round? And what is your longest birdie streak? Mine is 7 birdies (twice). My longest streak of birdies is 3 in a row, many times.
