I'm generally a positive, optimistic person. But lately I have felt a creeping depression as I witness my beloved 15-year-old dog go deaf and struggle to walk. We got her as a puppy from the SPCA and she's been the most loving companion.

I'm watching two mayoral candidates in Johannesburg: Helen Zille and Herman Mashaba. Both highly accomplished, respected South Africans. The Johannesburg mayoral race will undoubtedly be the highlight of this year's local elections. While Zille’s campaign has been impressive thus far, Mashaba needs to step up.
