Also he is eligible for parole after 12.5 years so the sentence is fair. He'll reoffend and be back in prison by year 15 most likely after hurting someone.

I have to admit that we are soft on crime at times, and people get hurt because of it.
I also remember that 18-year-olds don't have a fully developed brain and can't understand the long-term consequences of their choices. When white women get drunk and have sex they get to claim that they were raped or that they weren't able to make their own decision. Or what about when a young black man commits a crime? Perhaps under the influence or just out of youthful naivete?
I would prefer a sentence that makes more sense, like 10 years plus where he would be considered for parole at the age of 28. That would at least give this young man a chance to get out at an age that's young enough for him to repair his life.
A lot of guys get into prison and find out that their actions have impacted others, that their children are suffering because of their poor decisions, or they turn their lives around. There's nothing worse in my view than to have a prison inmate who's going to be in prison for another 15 years who actually has turned into a remarkable citizen. That's a waste of taxpayer resources
