@ericniebler @BarryRevzin Don't those "100 different directions" indicate that there is too much innovation in an area to standardize? GUI comes to mind. Although, yes, it could also be too much disparity that needs a cohesive solution.

@grafikrobot @BarryRevzin The ecosystem has gone 100 different directions on async. The result: libraries that expose asynchrony don't work well together. But if there is a *standard* async programming model, each lib can ship adaptors to that and join a growing ecosystem of compatible async libs. 🔥

@ericniebler @BarryRevzin Maybe missed my point. :-) The ecosystem can better respond to (and nudge) users by having a plethora of easily available external libraries. The STL should not be a lib distribution mechanism. Totally get the exhaustion.. The battle for the EcoIS has been grueling for me.

@grafikrobot @BarryRevzin I take your point, though. If you want me to stop standardizing libraries, then I have good news: the committee battles over executors broke me. I will finish the job, but after that I will not bring anything of significance to wg21.

@BarryRevzin And my #1 goal for `std::execution` is to nudge the industry in the direction of structured concurrency. Ranges and senders are my two biggest swings at incidental software complexity. Ironic then that they are both complex. 🤷‍♂️

@grafikrobot @krisjusiak It's very nice that they added the feature, yes. However I did correctly thank the person who made *me* aware that it had been accepted to the standard.

My @LGUS V30 phone finally died yesterday. So I quickly got a @Google #pixel8. And I have yet to find anything I like about the new phone. How can phones go backwards in physical and UI design?

I've had mountains of family stress to deal with the last couple of weeks. So today I did nothing by: * Watching random YT clips for a couple of hrs * Shower * Lunch * A Lego MOC * Totally avoiding thinking about or writing WG21 #cplusplus papers!!!

It took an HVAC tech, an electrician, homedepo delivery and failed installation, plus an emergency electrician over three days. But I finally have a new induction range to replace the old Wolf gas range.

@mknejp @RdilipkCG @oschonrock @hniemeye More like 6 people to care about it enough to participate consistently. But I'm still doing ALL the work so far. And I'm really, really tired. And could use help. But there's hope as we efforts outside of wg21 that are looking promising.

@RdilipkCG @oschonrock @hniemeye The committee direction, at the moment, is "not our problem". Apart from maybe 10 people who @grafikrobot managed to rally to work on a new standard because out of the 200+ people in WG21 nobody else gives a shit and they'd rather work on new and exciting ways of triggering UB.

When you speak of "addressing the needs of the mass of C++ developers" but then completely ignore the top issues of every C++ survey of the past 5+ years, namely package/dependency management and building, then the above statement is really hard to take seriously.

C++ Should Be C++ This was an evening session at the fall 2023 ISO C++ meeting based on my same-titled paper. I argued that drastic changes to the language aren't helpful, we need to say "no" more often, and that the committee should prioritize user needs. wg21.link/P3023R1
