@TimMLatimer Why is data center growth correlated with the autonomous fraction of US VMT? For autonomous driving, all the inference happens in the vehicles and training, which uses data centers, doesn't scale with autonomous miles driven.

One way to think about how durable data center growth is: currently autonomous driving accounts for a fraction of a percent of US VMT. We’ve got a long, long way to go.

Data centers in space. It might not be economically rational. But it might be physically possible. I’m trying to bring some quantitative structure to a conversation that’s been mostly big-number vibes. andrewmccalip.com/space-datacent…

Here is the detailed translation, including a bet where if the team losing, the head of autonomous driving of Xpeng is going to streak naked! A very interesting bet Our VLA 2.0 will be released next quarter. Since it’s the very first version, it has to be solid and reliable, and we also hope for a stunning debut, so the pressure is enormous. That’s why, after test-driving FSD in mid-2024 in Silicon Valley, I came back again recently. Yesterday I test-drove and compared the latest FSD V14.2 with Robotaxi. Overall impression: FSD has evolved from the silky-smooth L2+ advanced driver-assistance experience more than a year ago to now entering a quasi-L4 (software-wise) stage where you truly feel at ease. During the roughly 5-hour drive across Silicon Valley and San Francisco, both the standard vehicle and Robotaxi performed identically using exactly the same model — safe, stable, and consistent. There are still some flaws, but the level is dramatically higher than last year. My colleagues will share detailed videos later. This test drive made me even more certain that in the future there will be just one unified autonomous driving system and one unified hardware platform: one version for privately owned “Robo” cars and another for shared Robotaxi services. Everyone will be able to skip L3 entirely and directly own or use a vehicle with genuine L4 capability. Due to time constraints, our first version still cannot match all the capabilities of the current FSD V14.2. However, today while having dinner with the team, I made a bet with the autonomous driving team: If by August 30, 2026, if our VLA in China reaches the same overall performance that FSD V14.2 currently demonstrates in Silicon Valley, I will build a very distinctive Chinese-style canteen in Silicon Valley modeled after XPeng’s current headquarters cafeteria.
If we fail to achieve that, my autonomous driving Head, Xianming, has promised to streak naked across the Golden Gate Bridge. The whole team believes they’re going to win themselves a delicious canteen.
Who do you think will win? (Posted by He Xiaopeng 何小鹏, CEO of XPeng Motors, on December 11, 2025)

I have a guest essay in @nytimes today about autonomous vehicle safety. I wrote it because I’m tired of seeing children die. Done right, we can eliminate car crashes as a leading cause of death in the United States @Waymo recently released data covering nearly 100 million driverless miles. I spent weeks analyzing it because the results seemed too good to be true. 91% fewer serious-injury crashes. 92% less pedestrians hit. 96% fewer injury crashes at intersections. The list goes on. 39,000 Americans died in crashes last year. More than homicide, plane crashes, and natural disasters combined. The #2 killer of children and young adults. The #1 cause of spinal cord injury. We’ve accepted this as the price of mobility. We don’t have to. In medicine, when a treatment shows this level of benefit, we stop the trial early. Continuing to give patients the placebo becomes unethical. When an intervention works this clearly, you change what you do. In driving, we’re all the control group. Cities like DC and Boston are blocking deployment. And cities are not the only forces mobilizing to slow this progress. It’s time we stop treating this like a tech moonshot and start treating it like a public health intervention that will save lives. Link to article below. 👀 this video of Waymo cars evading crashes with people and vehicles. I especially note the ones that require it having a 360° view. My sincere thanks to Alex Ellerbeck and @acsifferlin for their wisdom and sure hand in editing this piece.

Honestly the thing that motivated me to do this episode was learning that there's less than $200M/year of smart philanthropy on factory farming - GLOBALLY. Just to explain how fucking crazy that is: 1. It's insane how cheap the interventions that will spare BILLIONS of animals from gruesome, painful fates have been. Less than $200M has been spent getting corporate commitments that have already spared more than 400M hens from battery cages, and securing pledges that will spare billions more over the years to come. That’s < $1 per 10 years of animal well-being improved. Another example: In-ovo sexing (which determines the sex of eggs pre-birth) has already saved 200M male chicks from maceration at birth (with the potential to spare 7 billion every year). And it only cost ~$10 million to get off the ground. 2. 80 billion land animals are factory farmed every year. That means the ratio is $1 donated : 40,000 animals. 3. Compared to the amount of private philanthropy alone on global health ($50b+/year) or climate change ($15b+/year), the <$200M/year of smart money spent on factory farming is nothing. — The way we treat factory farmed animals is one of the worst atrocities in history. And unfortunately, the problem is on track to get worse every year. The case for optimism: Given how neglected this issue is, the scope of impact even one individual can have is absolutely massive. To be blunt, there are individual readers of this tweet who could DOUBLE the amount of smart money our entire civilization dedicates to this issue. Even with a few million dollars, you could single-handedly improve the lives of millions of factory-farmed animals. DM @Lewis_Bollard if you want to explore contributions over $50k.

Just $1 can help avert 10 years of farmed animal suffering. I decided to give $250,000 as a donation match to @farmkind_giving after learning about the outsized opportunities to help. FarmKind directs your contributions to the most effective charities in this area. Please consider contributing, even if it’s a small amount. Together, we can double each other's impact and give a total of $500,000. Use the link below to donate with my match. Bluntly, there are some listeners who are in a position to give much more. Given how neglected this topic is, one such person could singlehandedly change the game for 10s of billions of animals. If you’re considering donating $50k or more, please reach out directly to @Lewis_Bollard and his team by DMing him, or emailing andres@openphilanthropy.org

@YunTaTsai1 @Clownbuck @dllu Right, but I think the point is, since the bandpass filter solves this problem, it is no longer an issue. Or does adding the filter introduce new problems such as degraded performance?

@Clownbuck @dllu So that it does not damage the photon diode and reduce the noise. Laser is essentially an energy beam. LiDAR has two parts — laser and camera. Without bandpass filter, those photon diodes can be damaged quite easily.

Only three things matter in perception — frame rate, acuity and dynamic range in a given unit of time. LiDAR has none. Thus, it’s hopeless for a robot using LiDAR to perform any delicate work.

Quantum Computers Could Break RSA Much Sooner Than Expected Craig Gidney of Google Quantum AI in Santa Barbara, USA argues that a quantum computer with under one million noisy (not fully error-corrected) qubits could factor a 2048-bit RSA key in roughly a week. This is a significant reduction in time compared to earlier estimates, which said that RSA key breaking would require upwards of 10 million qubits to complete in less than a week. Indeed, the same researcher estimated in 2019 that the task would take 8 hours with 20 million qubits. It’s not that the earlier estimate was wrong, it’s just that since then advances with quantum algorithms and error correction have slashed the qubit requirement. RSA has been used to encrypt digital data for decades. While the world is about to switch to encryption protocols that cannot be broken with quantum computers (the so-called post-quantum cryptography), it is highly likely that intelligence organizations are in possession of confidential, encrypted information that will become readable if quantum computers become more powerful. Up until now we assumed that RSA breaking would only become possible after other applications, eg in quantum chemistry, become feasible. Paper here arxiv.org/abs/2505.15917 Note: this paper has not yet been peer reviewed.
