Greek brothers and sisters, We share more than either side often wants to admit. Our nations are tied together through millennia of conflict, friction, coexistence, exchange, migration, trade, food, music, language, and neighborhood. We are not strangers. We are two peoples who have lived too close, for too long, to pretend we have nothing in common. As for historical grievances: at some point, both sides need to stop letting old conquests and old wounds be turned into political fuel. Much of what we argue about happened before any of our great-grandfathers were born. Modern borders exist. Modern states exist. The map is not going to be redrawn through nostalgia. On the Aegean, Türkiye sees the 12 nautical mile demand as unreasonable, not because Greeks do not have rights, but because geography matters. In a narrow, island-filled sea like the Aegean, extending territorial waters to 12 nautical miles would not be a small technical adjustment. It would severely restrict Türkiye’s access from its own coastline, push island-based maritime zones deep against mainland Anatolia, and turn a shared sea into a near-closed space. That is not a sustainable neighborly arrangement. Yes, Türkiye applies 12 nautical miles elsewhere where it does not create the same conflict or choke another country’s access. The Aegean is different. For almost a century, both sides have lived with 6 nautical miles, with tension, yes, but also with a workable balance. Türkiye is not seeking to conquer, erase, or harm Greece. And Greeks should not be pushed into fearing Türkiye by politicians, foreign actors, or nationalist fantasies that benefit from keeping us hostile. Chest-thumping is fun and all, but reality hits different. We are neighbors. We have been neighbors for centuries. We will remain neighbors for the foreseeable future. Warmongering helps no one. There is no real winner in war, in any war. There are only dead sons, grieving mothers, ruined futures, and politicians pretending the cost was worth it. So the choice is simple: either we keep feeding each other’s worst memories, or we build a future where the Aegean is not a battlefield of suspicion, but a shared sea between two proud nations that finally learned how to live next to each other without being used against each other.
