After my Richard Mille debacle I posted about, I decided I need my first big boy watch. The closest I come in that category is a Royal Oak offshore.
I want a watch I can hand down. These all cost similarly.
Which of these do you like the best?
1. Patek 5168G Aquanaut
2. AP royal oak chronograph in white gold.
3. Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon in stainless steel.
4. Rolex white gold Daytona with a meteorite dial.
(Yes, I'm selling a few watches to partially fund this and be responsible)

@beauhightowerdn Same. At 44, I’m as strong as I was at 18 and very physically active. But every week or two there’s some new twinge that reminds me I’m well into middle age.

People are misconstruing this post.
I weigh the same as I did when I graduated high school and I'm stronger at 43 than I was at 18.
But I can feel my Achilles wanting to snap when I shoot hoops, I have some osteoarthritis, and I'm going gray. When I grapple I don't bounce back.
This is life.

Man. I'm about to be 43 and I can actually feel myself falling out of my physical prime. No HRT and I've been able to fight it off through my late 30s and Early 40s by staying active, but not mid 40s ... I am starting to get weaker in the gym, the salt and pepper is becoming mostly gray and I don't think I could even touch the rim anymore. You somehow in your mind know it will come one day but for it to actually get here is a crazy experience. I see why people have midlife crisis now, because you start to lose the version of yourself that you have been for your whole adult life.

@EdLatimore I hear that. All things considered I’ve lived a pretty sheltered life (great family, friends, career). And even I have a dozen or so stories that if I told someone who’s never met me, they’d find them hard to believe. I can only imagine how wild things get in some circles.

I'm the opposite of naive.
I can believe anything is possible because I've seen and experienced enough crazy shit in real life.
That doesn't mean I'm gullible. If I have to make decisions based on your story, I'm a hardcore skeptic.
But those stories on this app, Reddit, or IG, where a person says, "Nah, that didn't happen"...
People are only quick to react that way because they've lived a sheltered life.

I don't understand how the tech media can afford to do this. What is the point of punching down like this? The whole ecosystem from founders to VCs understand that you try an improbable thing, you work hard for years, you learn, you get better, maybe it fails, you try again.

@alexsongis Similar experience in Physics 61.
Dude walks in with 20 min left on the 2 hour final exam, leaves with time remaining. Later confirmed he got a perfect score. He moved to the graduate physics track the following quarter.
I finished the 60-series but changed majors afterwards.

Still remember Physics 61 at Stanford. Advanced honors freshman physics or whatever.
First final. Class avg 41. I get a 43. Pat myself on the back.
I see “DS” with a casual 100. Shat my pants and decided to quit physics on the spot.

People underestimate the intelligence gap between classmates at the same elite college. So I have a friend, let's call him Joe. Asian American, met him at one of those "gifted" summer programs. Top of his class at MIT CS, worked at a top quant hedge fund, also a YC founder. He is significantly smarter than me. One day I said "man, you were probably like the smartest kid at MIT when you were there." He looked at me like I had horns and said "dude not even close. There were so many times I felt dumb." He then told me about a classmate of his, let's call him Ron. White guy. He was a legendary math olympian, and MIT classmates called him the Great White Hope. Joe was struggling with a math problem set, no progress after hours of laborious work. He finally swallowed his ego and asked Ron for help. Ron was playing video games, thought for a few minutes, and solved it with very little effort. Joe was stunned. That was his come to Jesus moment when he realized the limits of his intelligence that nature endowed him with. That there were levels to this. I was reminded of this story when I read the Scott Wu profile on Colossus.

@HeidiBriones I marinate mine in olive oil for 30 min and keep a nice coat of oil on it (plus salt/pepper/oregano/thyme) for the oven. Bake 20-25 min @ 400.

Kid started using affirmatives ("ya") as well as negatives ("no") and it is shocking how much he understands. Children's language processing is entirely bottlenecked by tongue motor function mastery, not comprehension and understanding

I interview high school seniors for my alma mater so have a pretty good insight into the preferences of top SoCal students.
Here is what I'm seeing as of now:
-Stanford is ahead of Harvard
-MIT is shockingly about co equal to Harvard
-Princeton & Yale are way behind Stanford/Harvard/MIT
-UCLA is now ahead of Berkeley/USC and on par with some of the lower Ivies

No serious person in LA believes Spencer Pratt should be mayor.

Tao and STK were pioneers in the horrible trend of ostensibly high end restaurants having club level blaring music and DJs. Thankfully that trend seems to have died off most everywhere except I guess Miami. Vegas doesn’t count because it’s Vegas.

example 1: Delilah > salmon felt undercooked and the whole menu felt like a kids menu (chicken fingers was their “special”) > bill was ~$300 for 3 people > worst of all: music was louder than clubs and it actually HURT all our ears only good thing was that the restaurant was cute
