@DaveKeating Yes, Churchill did say that. But *2* years later YU split from the Eastern Block. Yes, there was border control. But it was no more ironclad than any other European border at the time, and certainly nothing like the Warsaw Pact. “60 years of the Iron Curtain” is misleading.

@gregorspv "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent" -Churchill's Iron Curtain speech. Yugoslavia was later in grey zone after Soviet split. But this border was as brutal as Warsaw Pact in 50s & 60s, slightly relaxed in 70s.

I'm at Europe Square in Gorizia. This square was divided in two by the Iron Curtain for 60 years, when Gorizia was split in half by the post-WW2 settlement between Italy and Yugoslavia. The "Gorizia Wall" ran through the city, and Yugoslav soldiers kept it fiercely patrolled. When Slovenia joined the EU in 2004, the wall finally came down and the square (and town) was reunited because of the EU's open internal borders. Today you can walk freely between both sides of the city, there are no passport controls. Right now the square is being refurbished for when the Slovenian and Italian sides of the city together become European Capital of Culture in 2025. This is what Germany is putting at risk with their migration theater reimposing checks at all of their internal EU borders.

NOVO!

@NaomiAKlein What an astute man! Was also interesting to get a glimpse at his foreign policy thinking via that aside about Venezuela.

Walz would be a game-changing VP pic. Again and again he reads as: ✅Not condescending ✅Actually interested in people's lives ✅Laser focused on substantive policies (food, health, ed) that will reduce daily stress and drag us out of conspiracy land podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/is-…

The shortness of F.P. Ramsey’s life really jumps out now. Thank you ⁦@BritWittSoc⁩ for doing the work. I am honored to join with the Ramsey family in paying for it.

@becimay It pains me to see many of my fellow students discussing university in these terms so foreign to how I think of education…

What worries me about this is the assumption, visible everywhere, that the only possible defence of anything is economic. For a start, it’s a lazy way of arguing, like saying to someone ‘I’ll pay you to agree with me so that we don’t have to discuss what’s really at stake.’

@J_M_Olofsson @nialloconghaile When disregarding the basic principles of Schengen legislation *as interpreted by the ECJ* becomes “adjusting to reality”, that is a bad sign for Schengen indeed…

@nialloconghaile Schengen’s all well and good on paper, but in practice states reintroduce “temporary” border controls all the time. There have been checks for 9 years now on the AUT-SLO border, deemed illegal by the EU CoJ, yet the Commission does zilch. For trust, there needs to be enforcement.
