Many economists will tell you the U.S. runs a trade deficit because Americans want to consume more than they produce.
That gets the causation backwards.
Start with a simple question: why does the U.S. consume more than we produce? Do you think it’s because we cannot produce enough? Really?
The U.S. trade deficit exists because American leaders built an international order in which other countries were encouraged, for strategic reasons, to produce a growing share of what American households consume. What’s more, we wanted them to accumulate wealth in the mercantilist sense of growing savings balances. So we let allies, and later China, rely on the U.S. market for employment, growth, and savings accumulation.
But once household demand is directed toward foreign production, you create a domestic problem: less of that demand supports American wages and output. So the system requires offsetting sources of demand at home—credit expansion, asset bubbles, and/or large fiscal deficits.

So what do we think, fam? Were the intermediate missiles to Diego Garcia real or a false flag?
As a reminder the top range for Iranian missiles is supposedly capped at 2000km. DG base is twice that far away. If Iran has that capability it puts all of Europe in range and Israelis have made the connection to try and get the Europeans in.
The original report is from WSJ. NATO’s mark Rutte declined to confirm.

This sounds crazy but we saw something like this happen in China. Legacy banking is so outdated when companies like Alibaba entered the financial space with transfers, credit, deposits, investments, etc they become so large that they became a systemic financial risk to the country and Beijing had to clamp down.

Oh please, Bret. Please stick to biology and related disciplines which I'm sure you are an expert.
No AI powered robot can do just the ONE job I did in this Pic. This what I'm currently working on. Restoration of a circa 1870 Midwest house.
Just the unnamed subtleties alone a machine simply could not do as efficiently as I can.

This is the best piece on the philosophy of AI I’ve read on the Chinese internet recently. Combined with @ylecun ’s recent work on world models, it revealed a much clearer underlying trajectory to me.

The best time to plant a food garden was ten years ago. The second best time is today.

Are you prepared for a prolonged food shock? As I wrote in my book Resilient Citizens: "You may think it is primarily farmers and ranchers who are responsible for grocery stores full of corn or steak or whole wheat bread, but it is largely Exxon and Saudi Arabia. Our modern food system is based just as much on oil as it is on soil." Something to chew on . . .

He did not say "Middle East". He said "West Asia".
And most people will scroll past it. Like it means nothing.
But that one phrase… is doing more diplomacy than a thousand press conferences.
“Middle East” is not geography. It is branding.
A term gifted by imperial cartographers who saw the world from London’s balcony.
East of them. West of someone else. Never from our lens.
But “West Asia”…
That is India speaking. From its own civilisational axis.
Not borrowed. Not imposed. Not colonially approved.
West of India. Within India’s strategic horizon.
Translation?
This is not “their playground.”
This is our neighbourhood.
And when Modi says
“West Asia”…
He is quietly deleting 100 years of vocabulary.
No noise. No drama. Just a surgical rewrite of perception.
And then… he calls Emmanuel Macron.
Europe listens. India defines. That is the shift.
Not loud. Not emotional.
But deeply unsettling or those who still think maps belong to them.
Because once you change the words…
you change the ownership.
And once you change ownership…
power follows.
But sure…
keep debating hashtags.
The real game
is being played in one word.
