Over the last few days I have explained to a couple of evangelicals relying on his reporting that Phil Williams (@PhilNvestigates) is not a reputable reporter but a one-man hit job factory against conservative Christians. The latest piece of evidence for that—in the wake of revelations that the Southern Poverty Law Center has been underwriting the very kind of hate it ostensibly exists to combat, Williams immediately mobilized to defend the disgraced left-wing activist organization. Without any evidence, he suggests that the Trump administration’s motives for pursuing these charges are political. And his key evidence for how reputable the SPLC is that he has personally come to rely on them. (Yes, we noticed. That is not an argument for the SPLC‘s credibility, but rather an argument AGAINST Williams’). He further phrases those who have highlighted how the Biden FBI used the SPLC to track and harass conservative Christians as “lashing out.” In fact, this targeting has been well documented by conservative outlets like the Daily Wire, the Federalist, and others And to no one’s surprise, Williams suggests Tom Homan and other members of the administration are sympathetic toward white supremacists. So yes, evangelicals need to police our own institutions for sinful ethnic hatred. But Phil Williams is not the source to rely on for who those people might be. Those who cite him risk their own credibility.
