If I try to break down Flick’s logic behind the players he didn’t rotate: with Pedri, both he and the coach have said he feels better when he plays consistently rather than having long breaks, so the idea was probably to start him and then take him off early. Lamine likely made it clear he’s physically fine and doesn’t need rest as it's always reported he never wants to get rested. As for Eric and Fermín, they only played 45 minutes against Atlético, so from Flick’s point of view, that load isn’t enough to justify resting them. Because of that, the players he chose to rest were Olmo, Cancelo, Koundé, Lewandowski, and Rashford. It does make some sense, but i still would've preferred more rotation.

Another argument you could make for Olmo over Lewy tonight is that this is a game where we’re going to need total control of possession. Unlike the league game, Atleti will have Alvarez and Lookman tonight, so every turnover could very easily turn into a dangerous counter. And with both Frenkie and Bernal out, Eric in midfield won’t offer the same level of control, so Olmo dropping deeper and overloading the midfield could compensate for that and help us dominate possession more.

@ibtmrw Pedri's "bad" games are usually just games where he's less impactful than his normal elite standards - only Slavia Prague was an objectively bad game from him this season imo. Lamine is the same.

Cancelo type of fullback really fascinates me. He has an incredible traits and attacking affinity— you can see his game is centered on attacking. He has the pausa and dribbling amalgamation. Defending might not be his cup of tea, but has the quality to add more value in attack. Cancelo is a genio.
