The tragedy? Symptoms appear only AFTER 30-50% of lung function is irreversibly lost. Early stages are silent. Mild breathlessness dismissed as “aging” or “unfitness.” Chronic cough blamed on “seasonal allergies.” By the time patients seek help, damage is advanced, treatment costly, outcomes poor. In non-smokers (huge in India, especially women cooking on chulhas), doctors rarely suspect COPD → further delay in spirometry & diagnosis. We lose years of opportunity because we wait for obvious symptoms instead of screening high-risk groups exposed to chronic pollution. Solution: Routine spirometry for adults >40 in polluted areas, cleaner cooking fuels, better urban air quality, awareness that COPD isn’t just a “smoker’s disease.” Early detection = preserved lung function = longer, healthier lives.
