A few months ago I had an accident, and I went to the emergency room. It was a busy night I guess, so I was given a chair in the hallway with a bag of ice and told to wait. A few hours later, a doctor came by, ordered a few tests, and sent me home. In the end they found that nothing was wrong with me, thank God, but I was glad I had checked just the same. Then the bills started coming: To date they total $8,000. I'm uninsured. If only I were an illegal immigrant drug dealer with a few hungry looking kids in tow. I'd have no worries. Not only would my hospital visit have been free, they'd probably have offered me free health insurance and a monthly stipend to help with all the expenses I've incurred since moving to a foreign country without permission or a plan to support myself. But in reality I'm a self-employed Jesus loving American citizen who's paid taxes, followed the law and worked hard all my life. Go figure.
