Vaping has been linked to a rare and serious lung condition more commonly seen in industrial metal workers. Researchers examined a patient with significant lung damage and diagnosed hard-metal pneumoconiosis, a disease usually caused by exposure to metals such as cobalt and tungsten in workplace environments. It leads to deep lung scarring and progressive breathing problems that can become irreversible. What stood out in this case was that the patient had never worked with industrial metals. The only identified exposure was long-term use of an e-cigarette. When the device was analysed, scientists detected traces of cobalt as well as other toxic metals including nickel, lead, and chromium in the vapour. These are thought to originate from the device’s heating coils, which can release tiny metal particles when repeatedly heated. Once inhaled, these particles can travel deep into the lungs. In this instance, they appeared to trigger an unusual immune response, with damaged cells forming so-called “giant cells” a key feature of the disease. The scarring that results is permanent and cannot be reversed. Doctors say this is the first documented case of this specific condition being associated with vaping, though they caution it may not be an isolated incident. Because symptoms often develop gradually, significant damage may already be present before breathing issues become obvious. Although vaping is frequently promoted as a less harmful alternative to smoking, findings like these raise ongoing concerns about the long-term effects of inhaling heated chemical and metal particles into the lungs risks that are still not fully understood. Source: “E-cigarette user found to have rare form of lung scarring typically seen in metal workers,” ERS.

I can’t believe this even needs to be said, but a Muslim man stabbing his Muslim friend before going on an antisemitic rampage and stabbing Jews is obviously not the same. One is a hate crime, the other isn’t. The fact that the hate crime is being focused on is correct.

So depressing that this wasn't a poll result from 50 years ago when it actually could have made a difference. The Carnsore Point Protests occurred in 1978 and are legitimately one of the most embarrassing events in Irish history.

Hefty majority for considering nuclear power. If, as looks likely, the technology advances and modular reactors small enough to be trucked into place - to be used in factories and data centres etc - energy/climate worries would be a thing of the past.

@hasanthehun You need to be put in a labor camp where you get remedial English grammar lessons. Why do you type so pretentiously but can't even bother to capitalize things? You don't engage in discourse just in smug preening. You need to get a real fucking job. Why don't you have a Masters?

gamergaters in 2026 need to be put in reeducation centers that well call “vocational training centers” to the foreign press. the entire “pragmata will boost birth rates” discourse reminded how stupid and sad right wing gamers are. they need jobs, gym and a gf asap.

Anita Sarkeesian on the male gaming audience: "Some male gamers with a deep sense of entitlement are terrified of change. They believe games should continue to cater exclusively to young heterosexual men with ever more extreme virtual power fantasies." Did she blame men for her own failures?

@sciencegirl What @sciencegirl didn't tell you: • It was a THC oil vape • No metals were found in lung biopsy • Cobalt isn't used in vape coils • The imaging signature isn't always hard-metal pneumoconiosis The scaremongering is unwarranted, as this was an isolated case.

Last week, Róisín Murphy made a stirring, tremulous speech in defence of artistic freedom and women’s rights. Yet it was entirely ignored by the Irish Times and RTÉ. These regime outlets really are lost to the sexist cult of trans, says Brendan O’Neill buff.ly/BaQBsTh

Its such an abject failure of politics that a man in late sixties who's been a TD for 40 years and been in multiple government's,only realises for the first time that Ireland has to explore the feasibility of nuclear for energy independence &affordable electricity here long term
TheJournal.ie@thejournal_ie

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said Ireland should “consider seriously” the use of nuclear energy. Asked by reporters whether nuclear power should form part of Ireland’s long-term energy mix, Martin said the State should “explore all avenues”. jrnl.ie/7030692

Your occasional reminder that if you have no debt and a fiver in your pocket you are wealthier than half the world's population. That Eton and Oxford educated doctor with £80k in student debt and a £500k mortgage has zero, less than zero, wealth.

Just 56 people hold more than the combined wealth of 27m Britons. The poorest Half have 4.6% of the wealth. Poorest 20% pay higher proportion of income in taxes than the richest 20%. Can't rebuild economy without equitable distribution of wealth. leftfootforward.org/2026/04/waging…

One of the quirks of the Irish psyche is that we love people saying how great we are but then get absurdly upset when someone holds up a mirror and we don't like the reflection. An Irish stew of arrogance, hubris, haughtiness and a weird need to be told we're the best in class.

@JamesAThurber @SimonMagus You are being obtuse. Wealth is at a point in time. Income is a flow. Income>expenditure = wealth growth.

@SimonMagus If you consider the guy with a £5 note in his pocket to have wealth, then you need to be consistent. That's just how comparative maths works. Doctor, no flow or future income (Daddy's millions as emotional segue ∉ balance sheet), has greater wealth: W₀ = H - M - S > 5

While RTE chose to celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day today, the UN General Assembly declared it to be World Press Freedom Day to raise the importance of freedom of the press. Why? Because RTE didn’t want to mention the 262 PRESS & media workers murdered by Israel in GAZA!!
