A few weeks ago, Brian Cashman said it's always been the plan that Volpe will be the starting SS when he's back.

If the Yankees make trades this summer, it should be for pitching.
Specifically, the bullpen.
That might mean George Lombard Jr. plays short or third — which isn't ideal — but they can get by with him. They can't get by with this pen.

The Yankees bullpen is 2-3 players away from being scary, yovanny will be a guy that’ll be up as well as Lagrange. The Yankees will probably not try and pursue a 6 man rotation so Ryan weathers will prob be the odd man out, due to his injury history I’m perfectly okay moving him to the pen.

If these two continue to be anywhere near these types of offensive players during Anthony Volpe’s rehab I don’t know how the #Yankees can even consider handing Volpe the SS job when he returns.
Ultimately, they will but if they’re that serious about winning a World Series this year, they shouldn’t.
