A lot of people wants Balde sold because they believe there's something like a “complete fullback” which i think is a myth and also think it’s being used to unfairly judge Balde. The reality is that almost every elite fullback in football history has been a specialist, not a player who mastered every aspect of the role at once. Take Marcelo for example. Arguably the most gifted attacking left-back ever. His flair, creativity, ball progression and playmaking changed the position entirely, yet nobody considered him a defensive wall. He was often caught out of position, but his teams were built to maximise his strengths. We didn’t call him “terrible,” we called him a legend because his offensive impact outweighed his defensive flaws. The same applies to Cancelo(the same Cancelo we'reusing to size Balde up). Cancelo is a technically elite fullback with world-class vision and creativity, but someone who has always had lapses defensively, especially in tracking runners and 1v1 concentration. Yet he’s still recognised as elite because what he offers on the ball is rare. Even Trent Alexander-Arnold is constantly scrutinised for his defending despite being one of the best passers football has ever seen. Then you have Kyle Walker, whose game is built more around defensive recovery, athleticism and physical dominance than elite playmaking. That’s the reality of top-level football: every fullback has trade-offs. Now to Balde. His raw tools are already world-class: has the explosive pace, recovery speed, progressive carrying and the ability to push entire defensive lines backwards. Opponents constantly get disorganised because of the pressure and width he creates. That alone is an elite trait. And people ignore that he has improved. His crossing "will" get better, his final ball is improving gradually, and he’s only 22 years old who has had to deal with injury. That development curve is completely normal. What Balde needs is patience, coaching and stability around him, the coach can continue refining his offensive decision-making, plus strong centre-backs behind him to maximise his strengths and cover transitions properly. We’ve already seen how much better he looks when the defensive structure around him is solid. He doesn’t need to be the complete product today. Very few elite fullbacks were at his age. Demanding more from him is absolutely fine but asking thatnhe be sold is a stretch, not every fullback becomes a complete product overnight.
