@pmarca Is mere “life” sacred? Because, if that is the case, I’m not sure why the thumbnail is a human hand, and not a bunch of chickens going into a slaughter machine, or marinating in their own feces in cages.

These are the kinds of thoughts I think wantonly. But when I say them as if they were as pleasant as any fact, I realize that people are prudish about what thoughts they allow themselves to think, you know? Like this type of comment is a buzzkill for most worldly people…

With these kinds of takes, I sense an undertone of "Western countries should enjoy the benefits of modernity, but everyone else should be ensconced in their 'traditional' ways of life & be an ethnic circus specifically for the pleasure of the romantic Occidental tourist.

@KatieBaynes Start by going to the gym three times a week for an hour each time. Vary your cardio: bike, run, swim. Lift weights with different muscle group each day. Once your weight loss plateaus, do interval training. Ideally with a fitness instructor who will force you to push yourself.

I spent the last five years having children and like the suburban mom cliche that I am, I want to get fit by 40. What are your best tips for re-entry into exercise? I’m sure the science has updated since I last worked out?

Hope Hicks really was very pretty. She may be smart too. I wouldn’t know. I have never heart her voice. But she sure was pretty. I wonder what happened to her?

@DouthatNYT I realize you’re a young man for your stature and it may not be written yet. In that case, any other books? I like things that concede a bunch of my liberal indoctrination and then surprises me about where my contrarian gripes turn out to be pillars of a different ideology.

@DouthatNYT If I really liked “The Decadent Society” and “The Deep Places,” but not the Catholic politics/bureaucracy stuff, then what else of yours should I read?

A decade earlier, Mrs. Domek made me learn a song I thought was boring in a language I didn't speak. But it was for this. It was for Arlo. I tell the room we'll sing it once more. In German. Arlo sings every word. 4/

Early in my career, I consulted for Coke to ensure sugar taxes failed and soda was included in food stamp funding. I say Coke's policies are evil because I saw inside the room. The first step in playbook was paying the NAACP + other civil rights groups to call opponents racist

Addiction is tragic because the addict decides over and over again to discard what would be a happy and meaningful life, in order to be alone with their drugs.

@geersn @benthompson Isn’t it so gross when a bunch of low wage hourly service sector employees suddenly ask themselves whether they are willing to die for that job, and instead they decide they’d rather try to survive.

@benthompson Agreed. COVID completely ruined the hotel experience. Service and amenities are a shell of what they once were. Worst part is that hotels will never bring this level of experience back post-COVID because they know they can get away with being cheap. Very sad.

The degree to which Marriott ownership has cheapened the experience of once (and, in terms of the building/location, still) legendary hotels is so disappointing.

I had a deep, depressing existential crisis a couple years ago…until I got married and had kids. Schopenhauer, Sartre, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche were all childless and unmarried. No wonder they spent their lonely waking moments wondering what their purpose was.

That was the year, my twenty-eighth, when I was discovering that not all of the promises would be kept, that some things are in fact irrevocable and that it had counted after all, every evasion and every procrastination, every mistake, every word, all of it.
