@RubyVoxx breaking my "i hate this website" rule to agree and point out that what most people refer to as THE FIRST TRUE NOVEL was, indeed, a romance novel. An EXCEPTIONALLY SMUTTY ONE at that, written by a woman - but of course the people who complain about romance would never know.

on that note, books and reading are political. literacy has been used throughout history to oppress women and the impoverished and keep them submissive to their ruling classes. that includes fiction.

it’s wild every time someone thinks they’re roasting me by acting like romance isn’t real literature. romance books have existed for centuries. they’re largely marketed to women- who used to not even be allowed to read. they teach human connection and empathy. calm down doug.

my therapist once said "people don't abandon the people they love, they abandon the people they're using" and that was all the closure i needed.
