There is a strong argument for abolishing rates and massively shrinking local government.
New Zealand is already overgoverned.
We have central government taking a huge share of people’s income, then local government comes along and taxes the same citizens again just to live in their own home, run a business, or hold land.
That is not efficient.
That is duplication.
If a function is genuinely necessary, fund it properly and transparently.
If a service benefits a specific user, charge the user.
But this endless middle layer of councils, consultants, planners, bylaws, committees, and empire building is choking the country.
Too much of local government does not create value.
It creates process.
It creates delay.
It creates cost.
It creates excuses.
And the people paying for it are the productive members of society trying to build, work, invest, and raise families.
We do not need three layers of people clipping the ticket on basic life.
We need roads that work.
Water infrastructure that works.
Rubbish collected.
Public spaces maintained.
Beyond that, every part of local government should have to justify its existence.
If it cannot justify its existence, it should be cut.
New Zealand does not need more rates.
It needs less government, less waste, and more freedom for the people actually carrying the country.

The Australian indigenists emulate the model of the New Zealand indigenists. It’s the gold standard of libtard decolonialism. The Welcome to Country land acknowledge ceremony is what one sees in New Zealand civic life as a matter of course everywhere. There is state mandated indigenous cultural influence inserted and subtly interwoven everywhere into every area of civic life. Daily narratives bombarding whites with a reminder of whose country they live in, at whose gracious noblesse oblige they are able to occupy the land their ancestors settled, who committed the crime of expanding European civilisation within its borders. Any expression of nationalism among whites here is met by overwhelming negative criticism. The central libtard message is that whites do not belong here and it is not their country. We are in a pre-Zimbabwe phase.
The reason for this is that New Zealand has a form of state mandated “decolonisation”maintained by a broad left wing bloc composed of the largest boomer cohort per capita in the world—Dave Dobbyn “You’re all welcome” libtard egomaniacs happy to participate in the Winds of Change programmed in their head by the television set—and a <50yo female population of little Kate Shepherds who are 70% leftist. What you see on the American university campus as a leftist eccentricity in New Zealand becomes normal governing state policy.
New Zealand’s European population, especially its political right, act “like a fish in water” in this environment. The right here acts oblivious. They let the logic of the situation dictate everything to them. It is political illiteracy on the one hand but more commonly, worse, it is political collaboration that calls itself “pragmatism”.
The psychological toll of living in this environment is demoralising. One sees the effects of this in the white population’s lack of political nationalism.
And things are going to get worse too. The race communists in New Zealand are currently trying to forge an anti-white bloc with our Asian diaspora, which has gone from being nothing in 1987 to now 20% of the population. The Chinese fortunately appear uninterested in this type of race communism for now (they already have their hooks into the idiot boomers of both parties who have pivoted to China as some “independent foreign policy” larp) but the Indian lobby groups seem very keen to forge an anti-white alliance between Indian and Maori.
So while is certainly true Australia’s new laws are harsher than our own as some have pointed out, the reason we have not adopted laws like this in New Zealand is because the establishment doesn’t even need to. Our enemies have already won. The political establishment has been so successful in terraforming the political discourse.
The left won a cultural and political revolution in this country and the right are so bewildered they don’t even seem to understand what has happened or are collaborating with it as cope “pragmatism”.

I reckon Prof Renwick was called in in reaction to numerous complaints about the way his good comrade Johnny Campbell had earlier haranged PM Luxon on the issue.

Lets put this money into human terms.
A builder working 40 hours a week at $30 an hour earns $62,400 a year before tax.
After PAYE, ACC, and GST on what he spends, he generates about $18,559 a year for the government.
That means it would take more than 16 years of his tax contribution to pay for this one grant.
Think about that.
More than 16 years of a man getting up early, working in the cold, the rain, and the wind, using his hands to create something real.
If you looked him in the eye, would you tell him this is an acceptable use of his money?
Because government money is not free.
It is the product of somebody else’s labour.

So this is basically a household earning $169,800 and spending $183,500.
Yes, it still owns assets.

My assertion is.
Some (maybe more than you think) OLD EVs will be thrown down banks, perhaps sit in creeks or streams, contaminating km's of waterway.

The FACT is that a young family with not much spare money could buy a second ICE Toyota Corolla for under $5000.
No rust, 200kms on the clock, in pretty good nik
And this ICE vehicle would get this family to school, work and the shops - for the next 10, 15 or even 20 years if looked after.
An EV of the same spec would cost $60,000 plus, and the battery would be all but useless within 10 years.
The vehicle will be worth ZERO..
The family has LOST $60,000 - and probably still paying down the debt taken on to purchase this USELESS over hyped TECH (crap) @mikecasey.
Let EVs stand on their own financial model.
NO subsidies
NO incentives
NO stealing from productive UTE owners to give to non-productive mums running to the shops or picking up the kids in overpriced shiny EVs.
