I would love to discuss DISCLOSURE DAY as someone who was lukewarm on but it seems like the only takes allowed are: Spielberg is the undisputed God of cinema and no negativity is allowed. OR Spielberg is a hack fraud who made an evil movie. Neither of these are interesting!

DISCLOSURE DAY. Y'all, it's not demonic. Please relax. Its only real problem is that it's a boring movie that kind of goes nowhere.

@gohanflopped @SecretSunBlog It's a stupid MacGuffin whose powers shift on the fly in order to drive the plot forward. Is it a device that lets you astral project? Is it a device that lets you turn anything you want invisible? Is it a device that somehow lets you power a destroyed generator? Sure!

@SecretSunBlog The glow sticks never needed to be explained as it was unnecessary to the plot. He explained it without having to.

Spoiler Alert: Disclosure Day isn't really about aliens or anything like that. It's about magical glow sticks that are never explained or exposited, but comprise the overwhelming bulk of the plot. They also do whatever Spielberg and Koepp need them to do whenever the plot runs aground.

Disclosure Day was good not great. Bit of an 80s/90s feel. There are problems with the story, especially in the 3rd act, but it’s well acted. The biggest positive is that it wasn’t boring at any point. Spielberg still has it. The film is full of Jewish, Christian, and Greek mythological symbolism that I think is worth investigating. 7/10

@EzraCubero An out of touch billionaire positing that a little more empathy for each other, a return to respectability politics and placing trust in the 4th estate again is enough to fix a world being ravaged by genocide, ecological collapse, etc. is what cynicism actually looks like, btw.

I'm not surprised that the reactions to Disclosure Day are getting more polarizing as more people see it. However, it really disappoints me that the rampant cynicism polluting the online space is robbing people of feeling just an ounce of this film's abundant sincerity.

@stick52427 @nathanrobii PHM beats you over the head with its calls for empathy too, but it's slightly less ideologically insidious and features some nice practical effects instead of the worst CGI you'll see all year. Also has a competent 3rd act.🤷‍♂️

@nathanrobii "Misunderstood masterpiece" and it's just barely reheated Arrival nachos from an Octogenarian liberal zionist that wishes we could all go back to respectability politics and trusting mainstream media again. 🙄🙄

@halyconelement I actually don’t think he’s been all that “vocal” on either side, and that is of course a problem….

The problem with how Spielberg engages with the concept of empathy is that he does so in a way that is not remotely scientific. It’s honestly fairly uninformed. And it indulges in a “Theory of Mind” approach that I find to be pretty irresponsible and solipsistic.

@insufficentfund Disclosure Day, Project Hail Mary, He-Man, Star Wars - it's the year of the wrong era blockbuster. I'm sure you'll be able to add Avengers, Toy Story 5 and the new Hunger Games to the list as well.

Disclosure Day: vestiges of Obama-era cinema. Often incoherent and gaudy (there is a scene that looks like an AI Coca-Cola Christmas commercial) completely fastidious camera movements, mind-numbing screenplay. That said it is a key piece of his filmography in many ways

@regularaugust Young people want their nightmarish world reflected back at them so as to not feel so fucking crazy. Validation, in other words. Spielberg and his "everything is fine, we just need to be a little more empathetic" sloptimism may as well just be him spitting in their faces.

Do younger people crave “edgier” stuff for lack of a better word? Like the type of movie that gets people in seats recently have been bleak horror outings and not some old-style blockbuster (regardless of quality). I know horror tends to do well but are they “more drawn” to it?

@Strittposter Nah. Speed Racer embraced its camp with sincerity. MOTU is completely embarrassed to be a silly movie about a half naked man fighting a half naked skeleton man. Every other scene is a character turning to the audience to ask them rhetorically "isn't this shit fucking stupid?"
