#MTBoS & #iteachmath friends: What should I do with buckets & buckets of @NCTM journals? I don’t go through these anymore because I have digital access now. Just seems like a waste to recycle them...

@CourDFleming @professorbrenda This is what I did to eleminate the decimals.

@professorbrenda I would start by doubling everything so we're dealing with whole numbers (I find decimals easier to screw up when doing mental math). That gives a rate of 3 miles in 72 minutes. Conveniently 3 divides 72 exactly and we're left with 24 minutes per mile. Yay!

I just found myself doing some practical mental arithmetic. My family and I walked 1.5 miles in 36 minutes, so I wondered what our "minutes per mile" rate was. How would you think this through? I want to show my students how "math people" would approach this.
