Peace and stability in the world is built through friendship and collaboration among nations and helping those in need. Previous administrations- including both Republican and Democratic presidents understood this important American value.

It was an honour to visit Somaliland again and reconnect with family members, engage with different sectors of society, and meet with government officials and intellectuals. I witnessed Somaliland’s efforts to attract investments, reflected by the development of Berbera port, and its commendable record of peaceful power transfer and political stability. When I moved to Washington D.C.three years ago to serve, I came with a lot of questions about some of the inefficiencies of federal government agencies like USAID, but I learned a lot! I share my perspective here with the Startribune. There’s a need for major reforms and urgent need to leverage new technologies like blockchain and AI, but a total aid freeze is dangerous, even for 90 days. “Through U.S. foreign support, people get jobs, develop businesses and increase trade. The U.S. economy is improved through foreign assistance. When global conflict decreases, there are new markets for our companies. When labor standards are enforced, international trade is fairer. In fact, foreign aid is often the private sector and government working together. For example, on a 2023 visit to Zambia, Vice President Kamala Harris announced a $7 billion public-private partnership to benefit African countries that partnered the U.S. government with companies like Mastercard, Land O’Lakes and Vista Bank. Instead of partnerships, President Trump’s current foreign aid freeze is causing thousands of Americans to lose their jobs. U.S. small businesses, faith-based groups and international nonprofits had to abruptly stop their operations on Jan. 24. They are laying off staff and closing offices.”

I remember how excited I was when I got a signed copy of President Carter’s book. While one of President Carter’s indecision on the 1977 Somalia-Ethiopia war had profound negative impact on many of us, he was truly an inspiration for me and my work over the past two decades. I had the pleasure of working with the Carter Center on humanitarian projects around the world. He was indeed ahead of time when it comes to number of critical public Policy issues including climate change, human rights and gender justice.

Year-end holidays are special time shared with family and friends. My family is grateful to soak up quality vacation time, and saving work for the new year. But I know that many families across the world are experiencing increased violence, conflicts and displacements. I pray and will commit to do my part to help alleviate the suffering and contribute to transforming our leadership for greater impact.
