@nedwin I think a lot of the cheap terrible books that aren’t related to IP must be created specifically for sell in to large chains (ie Walmart) and are pumped out by publishers using fake authors (almost certainly AI now) and flat-fee illustration (likely from lower-paid countries)

@nedwin Licensed / IP content sells and is super cheap to produce. Quality original books are expensive to create (ie paying an illustrator to adequately cover labour hours), if it’s a new/unknown author you start with a lower print run, low margin and higher risk

Why are there so many terrible children’s books? Who is creating them, let alone buying them into bookstores and libraries? Worst offenders are those converted from episodes of kids TV shows. One category where I think A.I. generated content could quickly surpass half the slop being produced today.
