#AskBBCChelsea My new hop plant has sent out one VERY long shoot and several smaller ones. Should I trim any of them back?

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
Spraying just one dandelion with roundup will kill 100+ pollinators. The flower will take days to die, and in that time will be visited by dozens of bees and butterflies, poisoning them as well. The exposed pollinators don't die quickly, as they would with insecticide exposure. The death is slower and more brutal. In the case of bumblebees, they lose their ability to see colors, can't find flowers, and starve to death. If the dandelions truly are a hell no for your yard, pull them. Don't spray them.

Ah, dandelions. 🌼 If only they were rare, fragile, and hard to cultivate. Then we'd treasure them. But because they are hardy and successful and forgiving and adaptable, we disparage them. Consider them unworthy of our respect. Even though they are the perfect plant - providing green all year round and cheerful flowers in the spring, are edible and highly nutritious, containing vitamins A, C, and K, along with minerals like calcium and iron, and are our precious pollinator's lifeline. Please find a little love for these hard working flowers and leave them undisturbed, this month at least.

⚠️Attention! They're up! This video clip of a male attempting to mate with a female (who is 'chuffing' her displeasure) isn't from the usual mating season last spring. It was from last week! Because last year's catastrophic dry weather and deadly drought made late summer so inhospitable, our hedgehogs went into hibernation very early. Some as early as late August. 5 months ago. So now they have run out of the life-sustaining brown fat they had stored, and are forced to rise. But it's far too early, and there is no natural food around yet. The beetles and insect larvae that hedgehogs eat are still deep in their own form of hibernation, called diapause. So please make sure you have a dish of cat food and plenty of clean water out, in preparation. It is absolutely critical that we all pull together to help these poor hungry animals. A dish of dry kitten food which has meat as the first listed ingredient (Iams, or Purina One is perfect), and a dish of clean water put out each evening before dark, will literally be a life saver. Place a saucer on the top of the food dish to stop it being stolen by cats or contaminated by slugs, or make a feeder from the simple ideas on my website: hedgehogcabin.info/making-a-feeder This small, but incredibly kind and generous act will be the easist way you'll ever save a life.❤️ 🔊Sound on 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 @𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘯_𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘱.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Just a quick one about slugs and snails, as it's still a common question (due to some recently published misinformation). Slugs and snails are the intermediate host of lungworm, so can pass this fatal parasite to any mammal that is unfortunate enough to be forced by starvation to eat them, or is contaminated by their slime trail. This includes hedgehogs - they don't have any magical protection properties. But slugs and snails are also our heros, here's why: As well as providing food for many amphibians, reptiles and birds, they protect us humans from all sorts of potentially fatal pathogens. Take bird poo for example. Birds don't wee. Any water they consume is used and absorbed by their body. This means they don't have to have a bladder, so they are lighter for flying. Instead of wee they pass pure uric acid paste with their poo (that's the white bit on top), and so their poo is water resistent. (Anyone who has tried to clean it off their car is painfully aware of this) So if it's water resistent, therefore the rain can't wash it away, why aren't we all knee deep in bird poo? Because of slugs! Slugs eat bird poo. Isn't that brilliant? Slugs and snails are decomposers that consume various organic matter, including rotting plants, dead animals, and animal droppings, finding bird poo a nutritious source of decay from which to extract nutrients from. So slugs - don't eat them, wash everything that touches them or their slime trail, but love them for being nature's most industrious clean up crew!🥰
