terrible. 20 yrs ago, the internet was full of hobbyist blogs and forums. over time, these have been replaced by paywalled substacks and private discord channels, each a walled garden. google's decision to prioritize AI just makes it less likely ppl will create free, public info
Culture Crave 🍿@CultureCrave

Google announces it will now prioritize AI-generated answers in search results over human-written website articles • Search will be centered around a reimagined ‘intelligent search box’ • Starts next Tuesday (via @TechCrunch)

I think Iceman benefitted a lot from Drake splitting up R&B and the techno/dance/reggae tunes into 2 other albums. Usually he tries to appease every audience of his music on 1 project which gives it a playlist feel. Iceman is super cohesive in my opinion

And when you’re proven wrong, what follows after that? If you participated in smearing his name and reputation before hearing the final verdict, will you help clearing his name afterwards or will you just continue with your life? These are people’s lives okes 🤞🏾 The best thing to do is be neutral and hear all the facts before publicly defending or shaming someone. You don’t know what happened and you weren’t there. The details are murky.
DON’T!! ✋@Snegugu_Me

I’d rather be proven wrong for believing a victim than an alleged perpetrator

Tbh, Kendrick fighting his ego like Ichigo was fighting his hollow side in Bleach season 3-7 is probably one of the most human aspects of him and his art imo and I like how he directly speaks about it. “I wanna be humble, but I really really REALY love shitting on these niggas”
HB•RAINEY™️@RaineyOvalle

(I’m a fan) No one ever critiques him on actual substantial grounds Like how his claims to humility don’t match his holier-than-thou grandeur. Or how his supposed self-awareness serves as a shield from criticism. But his biggest critics are also very stupid and shallow people.

The degree of projection in this paper is genuinely insane. Your regular reminder that Anthropic was the first AI frontier lab to actively work with the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies to help them with their global surveillance program. Back in 2024 already, they partnered with Palantir "to make Anthropic's Claude models available to U.S. intelligence and defense agencies" (axios.com/2024/11/08/ant…) And remember the whole story earlier this year on how they refused that their AI be used for “mass domestic surveillance”? Notice something there? By definition it means that they agree with *NON-domestic* mass surveillance, meaning Anthropic has absolutely no problem with the U.S. military-industrial complex using their AI to surveil all 8 billion inhabitants on Earth, provided it excludes the 340 million Americans. And even the latter can be surveilled, just not in a “mass” way (whatever that means). Which, incidentally, is actually merely a restatement of U.S. law. Mass domestic surveillance of Americans is prohibited anyhow by the Fourth Amendment, and mass foreign surveillance is authorized under FISA Section 702 and Executive Order 12333 - the legal architecture Edward Snowden exposed in 2013. So Anthropic’s so-called “principled” stance is them actually supporting very same legal architecture that, back when the Snowden revelations broke in 2013, was rightly condemned as the most sweeping surveillance regime in the world (which it factually is). Which means that them warning that China's AI may be used for surveillance, and as such is dangerous, is literally them taking everyone for complete idiots. All the more due to the fact that, because China's AI is largely open source, you can use it in a way where you keep complete control of your data - unlike Anthropic 🤷‍♂️
Anthropic@AnthropicAI

We've published a paper that explains our views on AI competition between the US and China. The US and democratic allies hold the lead in frontier AI today. Read more on what it’ll take to keep that lead: anthropic.com/research/2028-…

I think it’s more that explaining in of itself is it’s own, separate skill, that also doesn’t let you signal fake competence. You can be super smart and not be able to distill concepts down; mostly because you’re taking language shortcuts that let you convey information really quickly. If you’re talking with work colleagues, conversations can be highly compressed when everyone has the same domain knowledge. The danger / meta here, is that *some* people use domain vocabulary to fake competence, without actually knowing the underlying field. It’s not that hard to “sound smart” just by using the right words. The way I’d put it, is *if* someone is able to distill a difficult concept to a lay audience, you can have high confidence that they actually understand the field. If someone is *not* able to distill a difficult concept, they probably understand the field, but there is a non zero chance (maybe ~10%) that they are just signaling via language without real domain knowledge.

People who think like this in the humanities and social sciences shouldn't be surprised when their ideas have zero impact on society and the masses keep regurgitating, and acting on, straightforwardly written propaganda.
danny@d4nnytye

nobody ever applies this argument to any other academic field of study besides humanities and social sciences. why should all theory have to be written for complete novices, and why should novices not be expected to broaden their vocabulary?

Chris Bischoff - Animal Use Protocol@StasisGame

20 hours of content for a single player experience is insane. Every Star Wars movie back to back is 25 hours. The LOTR extended cuts are 11 hours total. Throw in The Hobbit to get to the 20 hour mark. 10 average James Bond films will get you to 20 hours. That’s just under half the entire catalog. Open world games really did a number on the perception of expected play time with games.

The question of possible AI consciousness is deep and complex. Understanding how LLMs work is necessary, but obviously not sufficient. One problem is that many people make categorical claims without even having that basic understanding.
Eliezer Yudkowsky@allTheYud

Everyone bragging that THEY understand how AI works and THEY know it can't be conscious, explain right now from memory why it was very clever that the positional encoding in the original transformers paper used both sines and cosines.
