On 9/11, after the towers came down, Donald Trump boasted about the height of his building. When asked about 1,000 Americans dying each day from Covid, Donald Trump said “it is what it is.” He told us to “get over” a school shooting, that the Nazis marching in Charlottesville were “very fine people” and that those who are imprisoned for attacking our Capitol are “hostages.” His rhetoric is filled with vitriol and venom. He constantly targets specific groups or individuals with hateful and dehumanizing language. He paints his enemies as monsters, deserving of punishment. He appeals to the basest instincts of a segment of the population desperate for a boogie man by stoking fear and paranoia to justify acts of violence and aggression. He says things like: “fired like a dog” and “died like a dog” and “cried like a dog” because the selfless affection and loyalty dogs embody is antithetical to everything about him. This is the leader of their cult. This is what he models. Is it any wonder someone auditioning to be his VP, bragged in her book about shooting a dog? Violence is the brand. Anger, fear, hate, rage & retaliation are the tools. And the ability to commit acts of atrocity with ease and even eagerness is the goal. To defeat them we must focus on our collective humanity. When we see each other as fellow human beings, deserving of dignity and respect, they lose. A society of inclusivity, empathy, diversity and acceptance is an existential threat to those who thrive on discord and hostility. And that is exactly why doing just that is how we win.
