BREAKING: Keir Starmer has given US permission to use UK bases at RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia to launch “defensive” airstrikes against Iran - and destroy its missiles “at source” to prevent them firing across region. PM: “Our partners in the Gulf have asked us to do more to defend them… And it’s my duty to protect British lives. “We have British jets in the air as part of coordinated defensive operations which have already successfully intercepted Iranian strikes. “But the only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at source - in their storage depots or the launchers which are used to fire the missiles. “The US has requested permission to use British bases for that specific and limited defensive purpose. “We have taken the decision to accept this request to prevent Iran firing missiles across the region - killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk and hitting countries that have not been involved.”

I am horrified by the murder of a woman in Minneapolis by an ICE agent.
This is what fascism looks like in real time, where a far-right government emboldens a violent death squad to terrorise communities with impunity.
All the more chilling that politicians in this country have called for ICE-style raids to implement an anti-migrant programme.
Today, my thoughts are with the loved ones of Renee Good, and all those affected by this politics of hatred, violence and fear.
An alternative based on hope and humanity exists. It has never been more important to build it, together.

World football should be embarrassed and outraged that the game of the world, that everyone plays in all corners of the planet, has been used to promote a human rights abuser, currently extrajudicially killing Venezuelans, who play our game.
Locking up immigrants and vilifying all manner of cultures and faiths, who play our game.
Funding and arming genocide in Palestine, who play our game.
This award further stains the reputation of Infantino, FIFA, and places football as an enabler of Trump’s attacks on international law, multilateral systems, on justice, and accountability.
Football once stopped wars, today, it promotes the worst crimes against humanity.
It’s a shameful day for the beautiful game.
