The accused in the murder of a 22-year-old nurse at the B.C. Road KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal was traced by police on Friday but allegedly attempted to end his life by consuming rat poison before he could be formally taken into custody. The accused, Chethan, a distant relative of the victim Lavanya, is undergoing treatment at a government hospital under police security. His condition is reported to be under medical observation. Chethan had been absconding since Thursday evening after allegedly hacking Lavanya to death with a sword. The incident occurred after she finished work at a private nursing home and reached the B.C. Road bus stand to board a bus home. Police said the accused allegedly attacked her in public before fleeing, abandoning the weapon at the scene. Following the murder, Bantwal police launched a manhunt and formed multiple teams to trace the accused. During the search operation on Friday, police located Chethan. However, before he could be formally arrested, he allegedly consumed rat poison. He was immediately shifted to a government hospital for treatment. Confirming the development, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police said the accused had been traced and apprehended but required immediate medical attention after consuming poison. "The accused in yesterday's Bantwal murder case has been traced. He consumed rat poison and has been admitted to a government hospital for examination and treatment. Further details will be shared after the investigation progresses," the SP said. Police said Chethan will be questioned after doctors declare him medically fit. He remains under police guard at the hospital. According to the investigation so far, Chethan had allegedly been pressuring Lavanya to enter into a romantic relationship. Police suspect the attack was triggered by her repeated rejection of his advances. The murder, which took place in a crowded public area on Thursday evening, sparked widespread shock and concern in the district. Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether any other factors contributed to the crime.
