Proud European; opponent of the EU. The sound of swifts makes me happy.

Yes, much of the post-WW2 support for European political integration was driven a sincere desire to make it impossible for our continent to repeat the horrors of the early 20th Century. Having the best of motives, however, does not make one's diagnosis and proposed cure right.

My father landed in Normandy on D-Day plus one. Fought until 1945 as a Captain in the Royal Artillery. VE Day in my boyhood was a sober affair. He would toast the Common Market and later the EU. Never again he would say. More of that sensibility would be welcome this week.

My latest substack post drew me into my first ever political debate on Bluesky, in which I quoted John Stuart Mill to an anime avatar and the response was exactly as edifying as you'd expect.

Theres an entire generation of kids that aren't reading at all and this is the kind of navel gazing shite that our cultural institutions are prioritising. It's an absolute disgrace.

@issybryonyh @PhilJonesy3 Was going to ask if you've written anywhere about it, but sounds like it's a 'no'. I have a family member floored by LC, so keen to know of anything that has helped others work their way back some semblance of health...

@PhilJonesy3 Unusually for me I’ve tried not to moan too much about it in public! Hasn’t been too bad from a work point of view as none of the brain fog stuff. Just limited my ability to travel and do any vigorous exercise. So a bit boring!

@tomhfh Because it requires years marinading in elite culture before one is capable of the intellectual contortions required to advance an idea this stupid.

Yesterday I saw a man walking with his dog and a litter-picking stick, picking up discarded any packaging he’d find and putting it in the bin, crossing the road if he saw something on the other side. How many like him there are is the difference between a nice and a scruffy area

And don't try and convince me there's anything "extreme" about what I'm saying. It's perfectly normal and centrist to expect basic border control from your government, and mind-boggling that administration after administration just throws up their hands and says we can't have it

Welcoming the defeat of the Woke left in the US does not mean people have to contrive an adulatory narrative for every single thing Donald Trump does. His conduct towards Ukraine is objectively hideous and emboldening Putin by the day. That in turn makes Britain a lot less safe.

@cjsnowdon I believe there's a correlation between the prevalence of infectious diseases and a population's inclination towards authoritarianism. Maybe something to do with that?

Doctors were more likely to join the Nazi party than any other profession, closely followed by lawyers. Interesting fact!

Just overheard a posh lady in central London saying to her friend “the Palestine March was so exhilarating, I felt like it’s just what I needed” as she walked away with her Birkin bag. How surreal.

@DavidGHFrost Wrung his hands about it the situation being a tinderbox, yet used inflammatory language about the police being "able to murder black people with impunity" *despite* Derek Chauvin having already been charged with murder at that point.

@DavidGHFrost I'm still irked by the casual disregard for fact Olusoga demonstrated when it ran counter to the narrative he was peddling to the broadcast media after the murder of George Floyd.

Please disagree with her. Argue FGM is ok. Argue homophobia is fine. Argue misogyny is tolerable. Argue child marriage is acceptable. Argue Jew-hate is normal. Argue death for blasphemy is right. Argue slavery is justifiable. Argue you’re a good person.
