@FromTeachrsDesk I think standardized tests are good overall despite the financial stuff I don’t like. The SAT has become unrecognizable though…not a fan of the current format.

I am also very critical of standardized tests and the companies that provide them. Organizations like the College Board make billions on tests that often don’t accurately measure a student’s capabilities.
The SAT can sometimes pick up the absolute geniuses of the world. In a system that relies so heavily on grade inflation, it is important to get an actual read on the brightest students. Still, I think standardized tests need to be phased out, and actual learning and teaching need to be implemented.

The anti-memorization movement has left millions of students unable to think because every elementary operation consumes working memory.
For instance, solving equations feels smooth when basic arithmetic is automatic. It's like moving puzzle pieces around, and you just need to identify how they fit together.
But without automaticity on basic arithmetic, each puzzle piece is a heavy weight. You struggle to move them at all, much less figure out where they're supposed to go.
It’s the same all the way up the ladder of math: from arithmetic, to algebra, to calculus, to all sorts of university-level math and beyond.

@headmasterbeth @tetheredtoed1 Absolutely correct. Whilst it is the school/teacher responsibility to step up and offer a sound education, without parental support (Not necessarily academic support), a full or thorough education is not possible.

High school math classes pretty much all contain financial applications, including investing and interest. That material is taught alongside geometry and algebra and calculus, because it's not that complicated and it doesn't take that long to teach it.

Instead of traditional math courses like geometry and algebra, all math courses should be about investing, interest, and real-life financial situations. Instead of teaching calculus, teach kids how to calculate how much they'd make on a stock over X years at a 9 percent annual return, including compound interest and dividends.

We all survived bringing lunches to school and putting them in our lockers. 🤷🏻♀️
Providing lunch is fine — for a fee. Parents (not taxpayers) should own the responsibility for feeding their kids w/ exceptions for those in poverty.
Infantilizing parents the way we have is shameful.
"We don't even think you're capable of giving your own kids breakfast or providing their lunch." It's a disastrous message.

@headmasterbeth @DrLauraReames @teachthemx3 We used Bridges and our "extension" was just Concept Quests. Which were ineffective for some students. That's my entire point. Different students need different things. I'm getting blasted on twitter over this when it's just one tool in my toolbox. I'm not running a sweatshop 😆

If a student has already mastered a concept, they shouldn’t be sent to another room with a packet while the teacher works with struggling students.

@countercurrentz @DrLauraReames @teachthemx3 Fascinating! I realize it’s advanced math already, but I’d consider offering an extension option. Could be interesting to see what they choose. I know remediation (w others) means more work for teachers, but I like to see how high “ahead” students can fly.

Always volunteer based.
I (sadly) had a 2:1 boy to girl ratio so it was usually a boy. (This was a source of agita for me, as this was "advanced" math and should have had more girls.)

@countercurrentz @DrLauraReames @teachthemx3 I’d say it depends on how often you’re using this strategy, but as a student who was in the “tutor” position without extension, I feel cheated. This role also tends to fall on female students, so I would encourage you to think about it more.

We don't pay them a consultant fee for Student Ambassadors.
We don't pay them an IT tech wage for helping with technology.

@countercurrentz @teachthemx3 Pausing learning for high-achieving students leaves their potential unrealized and creates missed opportunities for growth. Asking them to tutor classmates could also create resentment. It is unpaid labor, unless you plan to compensate them at the going rate for tutoring.
