Dubai gets more attention, but many often forget that Singapore is almost as soulless. Literally an artificial "city" (i.e. a collection of roads and buildings) created out of thin air. More people should know that Singapore is not a sovereign country. Not least because of its existential exposure to the US financial system. The empire can crush Singapore like a bug overnight if it steps out of line. While it allows leaders of the "city state" to make the occasional statement or two about US hegemony, the minute Singapore takes any material action on the ground against US abuse, the "country" is finished. And it knows it. In this case, Singapore *completely* abided by US secondary sanctions on Iran, that were fully and unequivocally in violation of international law. "Principles" didn't come in the way then. But now when Iran defends itself against US aggression, and is even willing to give Singapore favorable terms, then suddenly "principles" start mattering. We are a country of principles after all.

The most annoying thing about being human on Earth right now is the absolute waste of potential. Brilliant minds and artists could be solving world hunger, climate change, and ending cancer, etc. We could house, feed, clothe, and care for everyone. But instead, we’ve decided to let a handful of asshats become billionaires, start wars, murder and imprison people, and keep the majority in poverty while ruining the climate. It’s so stupid. The wasted ingenuity hurts to think about.

I suspect the real reason for Singapore's opposition to a toll on Hormuz is not some high-minded devotion to international law, but because if it's set as a precedent and a toll were to exist on the Strait of Malacca, it would basically kill their current business model. See, geographically speaking, Malacca runs primarily between Malaysia and Indonesia - Singapore only controls a small stretch at the southeastern exit. Yet currently they capture most of the strait's commercial value through port services, bunkering, and transshipment: it's basically like them having the best "service station" on the world's most popular free highway. What the Hormuz precedent - if established - is all about is the revenge of geography: power given back to the countries that own the road, as opposed to those with the best rest-stop. Fantastic news for Malaysia and Indonesia (which is partly why you're seeing key Malaysian political figures, like Nurul Izzah Anwar, issue a highly unusual rebuke of Singapore over Balakrishnan’s remarks: x.com/amerhadiazmi/s…), but a big threat to a city-state whose entire economy is built on being the best service provider on what's largely someone else's waterway.
