Shoutout to PATHS Scholar, Mayra Mendiola, who will be presenting her research at the California Alliance for Minority Participation Program, at UC Riverside. Her research focuses on the sequence variation upstream of a cytoplasmic tRNA that modifies cytosolic tRNA expression.

Extremely bummed they’re discontinuing Amazon smile. It wasn’t a huge % of our annual donations for @SkypeScientist, but it was reliable and a decent amount of money. We’re so small that a couple hundred bucks a quarter matters. Ugh.

@MelisandeMarie @Ximistry1 I do think there needs to be room to acknowledge all of the work people like @Ximistry1 are doing to support historically marginalized folks beyond this strike. Ximena has done SO MUCH work to increase basic needs support at UCSD, by both policy changes and student advocacy.

Including mine! I have no family $ or savings to fall back on. My family has or currently works in the fields and has no union & almost no rights or protections. We're proud of these contracts & this student-led movement.

@HeydonEmily @shengokai FWIW UC’s policy was drafted AFTER the postdoc union proposed their version. The UCOP policy doesn’t cover students. I agree the proposal needs a lot of work, but I’m glad it gives me and other students an avenue to expand Title IX definitions of harassment.

@shengokai the anti-bullying article is *quite literally* a slightly weaker version of a nearly identical article that the entire UC system just adopted of its own accord (because I guess they were getting lawsuit threats from people like me who weren’t adequately protected by title ix)

I've been vague about the UC contract struggle because I'm not at UC, but I did look at the Anti-Bullying and Reasonable Accommodations policies in the new TA, and I gotta say that if that dogshit was the best my bargaining team could do, I'd have some pointed fucking questions.

STEM grad students I've spoken to who haven't been striking or will stop (1) face serious retaliation like Unsatisfactory (2) can't advance on dissertation w/o their PI or group (3) can't live off strike pay or (4) don't care at all. This is what I'm up against as an organizer.
