@hanbzu Some key questions I go back and forth on are: (1) should this be part of the relay server, or a totally separate thing? And (2) should it be totally generic, like the relay, or should it be optimized for a particular CRDT (eg automerge or crdx)

Maybe your codebase and technical choices aren’t the only thing holding you back. There are probably assumptions someone made long ago about the problem space that could bear rethinking.

This is good advice. A third option that I think is often overlooked is to leave thing 1 in place, while starting *completely* over with a thing 2 that approaches the original problem with a truly blank slate. A couple of examples here: herbcaudill.com/words/20190219…
