I cannot speak for NYC but as part of a Western nation that went through a similar shift in sentiment over the past two decades. After 9/11 and the subsequent social backlash there was a lot of propaganda attempting to counteract it. It wasn't until photos "leaked" from Abu Ghraib prison showing terrorists and suspected terrorists getting "mishandled" however that the pendulum swung and Muslims started being treated as victims. Obama being elected then shifted this even further until rhetoric that had been the realm of extremist tumblr posts (white guilt) started seeping into the mainstream as a legitimate world view, up until today where it has been the status quo for a decade. Cultural scissor statements and scenarios have been employed since the first trump term, and the mass bushfires and Taiwan/China escalation immediately preceeding covid to destroy the unification against corporatism and uniparty exposure that was a result of occupy wall Street. This has combined with the former trajectory to scenario you now ask about. A lot of missed context and nuance but generally these factors have been influential.

What's the earliest game art you created that you can find? Post it in the comments. I made some of the weapons for Urban Terror, a Quake 3 mod around 2000-ish, I think I was 15 or 16. The SR25 was a few years later, the first time I baked a normal map from a high poly mesh.
