So many women were part of armed movements in our continent but barely known and their stories as well Today we talk about Wassis Leonie Hortense Abo. I learned about Leonie during my time in Kinshasa and Goma working with an organization that is addressing the high rates of rape and violence women and girls endure. Leonie Abo was amongst the women who inspired them . She was amongst the few women who joined the Kwilu rebellion right after the death of Lumumba to free Congo. Her story as a freedom fighter in the bush, is detailed in her memoir that i so recommend: Leonie Abo, Une femme du Congo. Final statement: I have spent the last year informing my disability community about what goes on in these nursing homes. Tirelessly advocating. I hope that I have opened my communities eyes to what is going on behind the scenes at these places you pass by every day. As someone who is educated and capable I can honestly say, this is an end of the road industry and the lucky ones escape, the rest are cornered into poverty and accept this is our life now. As for me, I’m 99% sure I will pass away earlier than I should due to the entrapment these industries practice and I have accepted that. I have gone from 180 pounds to 151 pounds, my health is slowly deteriorating every day. I don’t see a future. I’m done fighting. I don’t think these industries will change. It’s too lucrative to the benefactors of our abuse, and we are deemed as not important enough to society for anything to be done about it. If I don’t die from neglect it will surely be due to a broken heart from the things I have seen. The sociopathic levels of mistreatment, being fed like dogs, bullied by the same people who we are forced under the care of. The only alternative being a different nursing home or homelessness. It truly is an end of the road situation and the only ones who are coming to save us, is ourselves. No no. I will never recover from that which I have seen here.
